Hello all,

New member here. I have a 2004 TLC that was bought new more than eight years ago. The car has 250k miles on it and a catalytic converter replacement has been long overdue. I have some questions regarding this issue.

1. The dealer is asking around $1.1k for one cat. Does anyone know where I can get an OEM replacement for substantially cheaper than that?

2. Does anyone know where I can obtain a non-OEM direct fit catalytic converter for substantially cheaper than $1.1k each?

3. I realize that although this generation of Land Cruisers spanned from MY 1998-2007, there have been some changes in between. What MY catalytic converters are compatible with the 2004 MY?

4. Are there any other options to consider regarding this issue?

Appreciate any help!

A good muffler shop can hook you up. You don't need a OEM cat. A good muffler shop will know the correct size for your LC and will be MUCH cheaper.

hm never thought of that. i will contact some muffler shops in the area. thank you.

Summit sells a generic cat for like $100. What makes you think it needs to be replaced?

i have a cel that will not stay off. i have heard bad things about universal cats failing prematurely so i am trying to avoid that route. my mechanic tells me i need new cats to pass inspection.

In the PRK and maybe others with smog control, IIANM you cannot put an aftermarket cat on your truck. OTOH, I think the smog devices have a much longer warranty by law, something like 10 years maybe...

Maybe you can speak to the vendor thats doing the catback exhaust group buy. Im sure he'll have something to help you out at considerably less cost. I think he has a headers back system.

I like this idea, just redo your exhaust and get your rig to breath a little easier!
Note: if you do the exhaust, you should also do intake. You can only exhaust as much as you take in. Freeer breathing intake will help with a freeer breathing exhaust.;)

thanks for all your replies!

i'm pretty sure the cats are the cause of the cel. just had O2 sensors replaced but the light comes back after 20 minutes or so of driving

called a bunch of muffler shops, none of which wanted to give me a quote over the phone. mechanic is looking into aftermarket cats, but will try cleaning the stock ones out first.

trying to restrain myself from doing anything with the land cruiser since it is a daily driver. i'm sure the n/a v8 is capable of producing an intoxicating sound, but i already have another car for that ;) i know what it feels like to get bitten by the mod bug..and it's bad.....

BUT

if anyone could direct me to this vendor, i would gladly appreciate it!

First: I agree about being bitten with the mod bug... Been there many times.

Second: I don't advocate a loud exhaust for the LC. I don't go wheeling where few have tread to hear some knucklehead thumping down the trail with a too loud exhaust.

Third: as a daily driver, you will probably get better MPG with a freeer flowing intake and exhaust.

And Forth: in the end... Its your call.
Have fun regardless of what you do with it. :)
