Picked this up on Thursday. Built 1/66, in pretty good shape. Worst area is rear sill area near tailgate - the hinges are rusted and some government welding seems to have hampered a quick teardown for an overhaul.

Questions:

1) Were any m416's fitted with "factory" tailgates?

2) Taking the tub off the frame should not require the breaking/torching/grinding of welds, correct.? I think mine has some "extra" engineering that has slowed down the teardown.

I have found TONS of info on here, thanks guys. I am not (at this point) making this a full on RTT adventure-type trailer, rather I intend to rebuild it and maybe add a few mods, but nothing crazy... famous last words.

What does the ID plate say? I have a '67 416 and it looks the same except for the back 4" and the storage box on the drivers side..

I don't think any of them came with factory tailgates.

Trailer is at friend's house, so don't have ID plate for reference. It was made by Stevens Mfg. (same as yours).

I'm pretty sure it's not factory, but whoever did the tailgate, he did a very clean job. The welds on it are old, so it's not a recent addition. Unfortunately, they also added a few welds between the tub and the frame - so I have to go through those to get the tub off. Not a big deal though, I'll just weld some more metal on there to patch any rough spots, grind it down and it will be fine.

Sweet. I just tore down my 416 to paint the tub and I think there's 12 bolts. Piece of cake.

Lucky man! :censor:! So yours didn't have 7 small welds on the 2nd to last frame crossmember support towards the back, afixing it to the bed?!?!

I thought it was going to be easy...I removed:

-4 bolts holding the front U's on
-2 bolts near front of tub, where it bolts to frame
-All the fender bolts
-The 3 bolts underneath that bolt the frame cross member supports to tub
-Now, I'm tackling some PO welds

If you have pics/time.... can you send me close up shots of the rear sill area, tailgate area - from various angles, including 45 degree angle off the back? Also, any pics, shooting towards the back sill from underneath the trailer?

I'm trying to see why mine is so "special". I'll PM you my email - or you can post them here. Thanks in advance.

There are some pictures here that may help. Mine has a tailgate cut in it already ( bought it that way ) but without anything welded in place. Let me know if they did the trick.

Geez, I now see the first problem - the rear of mine has metal welded on (probably to stiffen up the rear with the tailgate), and they added two towing/tie-down point on back as well - so, mine doesn't come apart like the stock ones.

I guess this is why they call them "projects", eh?

 absolutely. What color are you planning on painting it?

Torn between original olive drab or Mustard/Klondike Yellow (Toyota 532) :D

Right now I'm figuring how to get through the welds so I can separate tub from frame. I'm gathering a list of things I'll need and where to get them...so paint is a ways off!

I think painting it to match your rig would look sweet. just my opinion

Is that a rifle rack for leaning guns against on the left front side?

That tail piece and tailgate is "aftermarket" Mine is a 1966 Stevens which had a tailgate cut into the original tub.
