Heres a couple pictures of "Doo Doo" as hes is called. 1984 fj60 205,000 needs some love, but he runs .I own a 1988 toyota , so im not new to toyota but this is my first landcruiser .I do have a couple questions, I was told by the previous owner that that it has heavy duty springs as you can see in the pictures i think it sits higher than a stock fj60 , but im not positive, also in the side view you can see a shackel looks longer than s stock one. I would apperciate it if you guys could let me know what you think. I payed 1,400 came with a set of 35in super swampers. that i was told was on the truck when the Po bought it.

Welcome to 'Mud :flipoff2:

Looks pretty nice.. [ esp.4 Mich] I like doo doo brown. You've come to the right place to answer questions and get support for your new addiction.

[ If you don't already know,you'll be pawning your grandmamma's T.V. soon,to buy parts.]

It's hard to believe that anyone had 35's on it though.

Oh , and remember.........Cruisers aren't slow trucks ! ....

The're really fast tractors !

Welcome

Maybe some closeup pictures if you have any would help but the front shackles look stock. What size tire are you running in picture. To run 35's you need some clearance so sounds like you have some amount of lift over stock.

How does it run?

The truck runs Ok, the valves need to be adjusted, the air rail isnt connected to anything, the exhaust pipe that come up to the egr(i think) isnt there so i need to get that. theres definitley not as many vaccum lines as ive seen in other fj pictures so ill have to address that, i just bought the truck last weekend and had to go down to school so i really havent even started to dig into it, but i plan on plugs air filter fuel filter this weekend, also im going to take a die grinder with some cookie discs and take off the surface rust on the frame then put some good rust inhibitor on it(any suggestions). also the clutch needs to be addressed, i had to double clutch it all the way home, guessing theres air in the line because the guy put a new slave cylinder on it and i think he didnt bleed it well enough, it sank to the floor the first time then the second time felt ok, i guess it could even be the master for the slave. I was wondering is it pissible to just take off the air pump and the ac and just run shorter belts. if so that would be easier for me because the air pump bearing needs to be replaced, and i dont need a/c, I was reading and see you can take the vanes out and if i do that i can just change the bearing then, but id rather just get rid of it. another question, the air pump pumps air into the air rail on the manifold? if so where does the pipe from the exhaust pipe on the drivers side go? Ill try to get some updated pictures of it this weekend.

Welcome to MUD!

It sounds like some one started to Desmog it but gave up. Use the search feature and check Desmogging a 2F in the 60 series section.

It does look like a lift has been installed. Measure from the bottom of you frame to the ground on all four corners as well as the tire size and maybe we can figure out what size lift it is. Look on top of the spring pack for part numbers or symbols and post them as well.

Congrats!

Yea i have looked in the desmog section, also i found a "idler" pulley that will replace the smog pump if i wanted to take it off. Does anyone know what the ride height should be on a stock fj?

I have old stock springs with 31" tires and it is 15" to the bottom of the frame. (Stock tires are 28".)

Yes definitley want to put some tires on it, im just really trying to find out where i stand, and go from there, first things first the motor work(valves adjusted belts, filters, fluids, vaccum lines air rail, egr.) and smog pump, bumper and sliders, lockers then the tires.i have a set of 31's for the time being. In the long run i want to make it 100% but that wont be for a couple years at least , like everyone i talk to says just hand over your wallet, because your never gonna have money again. But im ok with that because i love the truck. It does ride like a tank , ive never been in another fj to compare it but me a 2 buddys got on the front bumper and it barley squatted. so the springs reguardless of being heavier or not are in great shape front and rear.

Old Man Emu (OME) heavy duty springs give, I think, 3" of lift. Most people with that lift run 33s. I think you can fit 35s on it but it may not give enough room to really flex. Close-ups of the shackles would help figure out if they are oversized. But there are a lot of companies that make springs for the 60 so you'd have to get some numbers or something off the springs to figure out the manufacturer.

Yea ill do that, the super swamper might be 33's but i thought they were 35, On the drivers side quater the tire came off the rim and did some damage on the body.

I can't imagine that the rig had 35's on it for long unless it is lifted. Even then, it would be a dog unless they regeared the differentials. Stock diffs are 3.70s. They will work with 33 inch tires but you will find yourself in 3rd gear going 45 mph on the long hills. Welcome to the board.

Its sitting on 31's on the picture right now, i was also told by the po that is has 4.10-11's for the mig tires, but the rpms dont seem to be up .

My PO told me the same thing but the RPMs say they are 3.73. Maybe they just mixed up the fj62 (which has 4.11) with the fj60. The fj40 also has 4.11.

You should be able to tell what ratio that you have by jacking up one rear wheel and then turning the driveshaft and counting revolutions. If the drive shaft goes around less than 4 times to turn the tire once=3.70 (Stock 60 ratio). Slightly more that 4 times=4.11 (Stock 62 ratio). The diffs of the 60s and 62s are interchangeable so it could be that the PO changed them.

my speedometer is 20% slow with 33's. when it says 60 it is actually going 72. turning 72 mph @ just under 3700 rpm's .......... that should be 4.10 roughly. Although 3.73 with 33's would explain my rather weak clutch after letting my wife drive it. this is on an 82 FJ60

Just got my March/April issue of Toyota Trails and determining gear ratio is discussed in the Truck Tech section. For open diffs lift one wheel and turn it TWICE; driveshaft revolutions = your gear ratio.
