Well I finally got one. An 85 FJ60. Now what?

The body is in good shape, the paint job was a little sloppy, but my prob is the under side. I need some help.

1. The Tranny or the T-case leaks. I dont know from where. I keep checking the fill plugs on both.
2. It needs a lube job, where do I start- I got the gun and the greese, but not the nipple for the front. Any ideas on how to start.
3. The brakes get hard at low RPM. I Rev-up and they work. Vacume leak?
4. The power steering pump blew a seal and I replaced it. now its harder to turn. Steering gear or just another part of needing to lube the front end?

5. Later down the road I want to replace the 4 sp Man with a 5 sp tranny and t-case but that costs more then my jar of quarters right now.

Any help would be appreciated as to where to find better manuals then the Kragen or Chief auto type. (Yes I already bought them)

Thanks

Hi Dave,

Welcome!

First, you need a factory service manual (FSM). You can get them from three places that I know of:
1. Specter Off-Road (SOR.com)
2. Toyota Material Distribution - 1.800.622.2033
3. CDan of American Toyota (great discounts for IH8MUDers, but on vacation right now).

Any autoparts store will have the replacement lube nipples you need.

Re the leaking tranny/transfer, could it be engine oil? The 2F engine is well-known for it's ability to leak oil, and it gets everywhere. Good to check fluid levels in any case.

Best Regards,

Welcome!!
your transfer case is probably leaking around the output shaft seals. they are easy to replace. look underneath on the tub and see it the oil looks like it has be thrown in a fan like shape. if so go to napa, get the seal, and you're in bidness.

Welcome Dave and congrats! Definately get a Factory Service Manual. Much more informative than others. And when you do, it will tell ya where all your zerks are. Lube away! :)

Thanks to all, I will be getting the FSM and the nipple shortly.

1. Thanks, Im thinking of pulling the skidpan and steaming the underside to get a "clean" perspective on the "siti-A-tion". As of right now there is no fan shaped spray on the tub. it just leaks. but there is a build up of grime on the front shaft, and the skidpan is coated with residue from dirt and oil. I dont know which Gear or motor oil. but a good cleaning can only help

2. Still looking for why the steering is hard after replacing the power steering pump. I read the manual, and the specs call for Dextrol instead of power steering fluid  . I hope that is the right way to go and its not a FUBAR :whoops: on my part.

3. Any sugestions on where to look or how to look for why brakes get hard at low RPM. I rev-up and problem goes away, but it is annoying, and could get nasty in Los Angeles Traffic.

Thanks for the info

More later as the quarter jar gets filled

Dave

Congratulations on you new purchase. Yes, get a FSM.

I would thoroughly clean the underside and inspect it regularly to pinpoint the leaks. Some leaks are easy to fix, others, well, lets hope you don't have the others.

Congratulations on the new to you 60! I aree with others get the Factory Service Manual and alot of metric tools. These beasts will run forever and go anywhere but they require some maintance.

The brake problem could be the result of overall low vacuum in the engine. Do a vac check, you should have at least a steady 14-15 inches of vacuum at idle. Less than that and there may be other problems. If vacuum is good then check the vac line to the brake booster for leaks. If that's good then your brake booster itself may be bad which is a pretty much replace only deal.

Can't help on T-case or pwr steering.
When you get to lubing her don't forget the steering knuckles. There are to pipe plug looking screws with square ends on either end of the front axle. Remove those and fill with grease.

Well the quarters came and went. Went to 2 parts stores in the LA area, neither had the right size nipple for the 13mm grease fitting so I made one. took a little longer then I thought. The grease gun spring kept binding and I was wasting more grease then I used. but it is done.

Castrol Super Clean made short work of the grime. both on the LC and me Good stuff.

More later

You seem to have the bulk of the stuff under control. I have the H55F tranny installed with the late model (standard) TCase. This probably the TCase that you have. If so the 5 speed will bolt right up - and it makes a huge difference in highway driving, and is better on the trial as well.

This is not a cheap mod, but worth the bucks.

Congrats on joining the world of Land Cruisers. Your pwr steering pump may be bad right out of the box-especially if its not OEM. If you bought it at checker or some other box store good chance it is a poor rebuild. go get another one or cash in you chips(read Quarters) and get a Factory rebuild it will last alot longer than any other out there. good luck and happy Cruisin'

FJ 60, 85 LC :
Was looking at the paint job on the beast, and noticed what I thought was rust on the roof. IT wasnt, It was the cheap As$ dirt paint job the guy who had it before me had done on it. He just painted over the red paint, and in some spots didnt clean it very well.
Toyota Red, is not my color. I like the silver better.
Then I noticed something else. A Dent from what looks like a return to earth 9mm round. Yeah, Life in Los Angeles really bites.
I dont even let the kids in the LC without a handy wipe down first and some pinhead pops off a 9mm round and it comes down just off center 3 inches in from the rear window on the roof. I cried. now I have a dent in the roof and no way to repair it short of taking it to the shop and having some body work done on it.
This is out of the question because my National Guard unit is being deployed for a year and no one in my family knows how to drive a stick (He He He- Wifey cant drive the beast and I dont trust the kids) plus I wont be here to inspect the work done as it happens; or to take the LC out for warn ups. So basically Im stuck driving Hummers for a year while my LC sits.

Life stinks- I finally get the LC I want, and now I gotta go to the Sinai for a year

1. I know they have dog walkers but do they have LC drivers?
2. Any place where I can have work done that can be trusted; Someplace where I wont have to park a Bradley on thier chest when I get back and see a rust pile where my LC was?

Thanks for the venting-

Dave
