Hello all. Just thought I would do a quick intro since this is my first post. I'm a Jeep guy (;p) but am here since it seems to be THE place for trailer info. I recently picked up a m416 for $300. The body and frame are in great shape with just some heavy surface rust, but almost no pitting. The trailer lights have been replaced with cheapo 12v and it could probably stand to be rewired. It still has the lunette ring and landing leg intact and working. The brake handle is there, but no cables. The previous owner did cut in a tailgate with I'd prefer not to have, but he did a decent job so I may keep it instead of welding it back up.
I have the trailer up on jackstands right now because I noticed the evening before I was suppose to get it inspected that both leaf packs are shot (broken leafs). I'm going to a local spring shop today to see about having replacements made.
I plan to tear the whole thing apart this winter and get the rust off before it gets too bad (Rochester, NY winters aren't good for anything with steel) Will probably Herc the interior and the underside as well.

Anybody have a source that will show me how to maintain the bearings?

Looks like a good starter and welcome to mud pretty soon you'll start to think about selling the jeep and looking for a 40. Thats what I ended up doing and then I had to get a trailer also. This place is addicting!!!

Here's a good resource for your 416 to get you started:

It is not, I can stop anytime I want.

I just don't want to.

Welcome,

That's a nice trailer you got yourself.

Check out the build thread of my M416 (the link is below in my signature) to see what you have in store for yourself.

As for the bearings, there are several M416 groups out there. Just about each of them has the Tech Manual in PDF format that you can down load onto your computer. Do a Google search for M416, look for the MSN group and the 2 Yahoo groups. That should help you out.

You can find a replacement brake cable on Ebay. But first, go to www.g503.com and go to the 1/4 ton trailer board. Post the question about where to find a replacement cable. Then check the prices on the sites recommended by the guys on the G503 before you bid on anything on Ebay. I should have done this with one item, it would have cut what I paid in half.

Good luck with your rebuild. :grinpimp:

Gently, we don't want to scare them off. :grinpimp:

I don't get scared off that easy and I'm fully aware of the "junk" factor.....I've owned 5 of them  I'm actually a big fan of the old 'yota's, just never came across a deal and after having 5 Jeeps ('95 YJ, '79 FSJ, '88MJ, '98 XJ, '91YJ) I know the Jeeps pretty well when I do have an issue.

Kevin, that has got to be the best documented restoration I have ever seen! Kudos to you for doing all that in only 2 weeks. Can I ask a ballpark on what you spent?

My plan is to do something similar over the coming month or so. I was going to wait until winter so I could use it for some firewood, etc. but I found that both leaf springs have a busted main leaf so I'm starting early.

The day we learn to embrace all the other 4x4's is the day we can actually start working together to keep trails open. :D

Welcome, nice looking trailer bud.

X2, they are all good. It's all about having fun and respecting the outdoors.

I haven't added it all up yet. But, I think that I spent about $1500 on my rebuild. Do let that amount scare you, almost half of it was the cost of having the tub sprayed with Line-X. They wanted $400 for just doing it in black and you then add $300 for having it done in the color of your choice (have a color code ready). Doing a Herculiner would have saved a lot of $$, but I didn't have the time and I wanted a color that Herculiner didn't come in.

Also, I spent $350 on having it sandblasted. If you plan on having it sandblasted, shop around for the best price. Most of the shops were quoting $700 to do it.

If you have the time to do these 2 tasks, then you can save a lot of money. I just had a tight time frame that I had to get it done in.

Good luck with your rebuild.
