Just went with a fuel cell setup on my 75 Fj40 and am having trouble with it running like crap. Holley high performance electric fuel pump, and I even installed a fuel regulator thinking that it would help, no luck. I have heard that the float bowl might need to be adjusted is this the case you think or do I need a rebuild kit or new carb to keep up with fuel flow? Thanks

Hi All:

So where is this new fuel cell located in the vehicle?

What carb are you running?

Did you install the "high performance" fuel pump at the same time as the fuel cell?

Regards,

Alan

I mounted it in the center of the tub in the back. 20 Gallon RCI Cell and yes the Pump was installed at the same time. I went with all Holley accessories including a fuel regulator which I was told would solve the problem but didn't. I am running the stock 2F carb.

What's the problem?

Whaddaya mean "running like crap"?

What makes you think it is fuel related?

Well. it all started when I added the fuel Cell and Fuel pump. It has no power and sputters like crazy. It runs way better with the air cleaner off. Didnt have a problem before the fuel system change. The only reason I did it was cuz I crushed my tank and needed one in a hurry. maybe I should have made the effort to find a new tank or a poly one and kept it runnin off the stock pump.

If it runs better with the air cleaner off, maybe it is running rich. Is the air filter clogged or dirty?

If it ran fine before the fuel system change and it runs "way better" with the air cleaner off, it is not likely an ignition problem. If it is bucking and spitting back through the carb, it isn't getting enough fuel. If the fuel level in the bowl is too high it might be running rich or even dumping raw fuel into the manifold from the bowl vents. What is the pressure rating of the "high performance" fuel pump. You definitely don't want a pump designed for fuel injection pressures.

It is a 67gph pump @ 7psi. I am thinking of trying to run off the stock pump again and see if it helps at all. It could be that the pump is not the right application for my unit.

I went back to the stock pump and the sputtering and rough idling is gone. It is a bit choppy still but I figure I probably fouled the plugs pretty good so a good cleanin and I should be good to go. Thanks for all the help.
