Hi ,
would just like any ideas as to what exhaust system I should put into the landcruiser behind a 12ht diesel. Is there any benefit in a 3" exhaust over a 2.5" exhaust. ( just a bit harder to route a 3" through) . 12ht is going to be reconditioned and a new turbo with intercooler etc. What sort of muffler should I be using? Do I need a high flow muffler? any brands worth considerinng and whats the difference?
Any help much appreciated

here's couple pics . she was a gx cruiser with 2H engine but I have a vx with a 12ht which is going to swap into her.
still lots of work to be done

Turbo-diesels like to have as low back-pressure as is reasonable. The engine will respond to the throttle better with low back-pressure and, in my experience, return slightly better fuel economy too.

When I got my Cummins-Dodge it had a 4" system to the rear bumper with no muffler. In the cab it was quiet enough (though probably pretty loud outside), but it had a drone to it at cruising speed. Adding a 4" thru, 60" long round truck muffler killed the drone and quieted it without appearing to hurt the economy or response.

Not sure where in NZ you might find truck mufflers, here in the States we had parts houses that deal only with heavy truck parts. The muffler that I bought cost less than any of the 4" "hot rod" type mufflers and is equal or better quality.

Ive got a straight through 3" on my 12ht.
No mufflers, fairly loud, nothing excessive.

Better fuel economy, and noticable power gain.

Ive got a boost controller set at 13 psi.
Still manages under 10 litres per 100klm even with 600,000klms on the clock.

3" is the correct size for a 12ht

My photos are at www.peoplehelp.com.au/landcruiser

I routed mine on the outside of the chassis to make room for more tanks space underneath. It ducks back inside the chassis and over the axle, then there is a hot dog muffler at the back in the same place as the standard second muffler. By hot dog, I mean a cylindrical straight through resonator, not a muffler that interferes with exhaust flow. It sounds fine, not at all loud, maybe a bit of resonance at cruise, but nothing objectionable.

Increase in torque was noticeable, much better pull up long hills.

If you're doing it up and adding an intercooler, please check my website for what I've done, and also consider a GTurbo. Do yourself a favour!

Also, best to post questions on diesels in the 24v and Diesel section.

If you can afford it and can find someone to squeese it in there then a 3" is the way to go.
I see that your second muffler has already been removed, it is usually behind the rear wheel...
Ive recently removed my rear muffler and replaced with pipe that exits just behind the rear wheel, its a tight fit!
You are on the north shore? Im out west Auckand, get in touch if you are ever going for a 4wd locally.
