Just had a set of BFG Trail Terrain tires mounted to the Land Cruiser yesterday. This is a new model tire for BFG that gives you a KO2 inspired tread in a more road friendly design in P metric. I went with the stock size and they appear a little wider than the stock Dunlops. Time will tell how they ride, but so far so good. Just as quiet as the Dunlop’s.

Gen-u-wine Overlanding tires - look like ATs but function like street tires. Geesh, what is the world coming to? :)

For the life of me, I can't figure out what is road-unfriendly about oversize E-rated LT BFG AT KO2s.

Agreed, but this new girl has a long life ahead of her before she takes over as the rock crawler in the household. Her current role in the stable is daily driver & tow rig at least until that warranty expires. No need for extra rolling mass and load capacity at the moment.

It looks great! BUT, for a P-metric with seemingly “ordinary” sidewall, it weighs 45 lbs per tire!

Comparison just from top of my head:

Michelin Defender XL stock size = 39 lbs.

BFG KO2 LT stock size = 53 lbs.

With a good bit more rubber on the sidewall tread and 2/32 more tread depth, the weight being somewhere between a K02 and Defender seems about right. I am interested in these for my Tacoma that I use mostly for highway use. Of note, Tire Rack's review of them was less favorable than I expected, but their Audi crossover test vehicle is certainly a different animal than a Cruiser or a Tacoma.
They look like a good compromise for a lot of people. Decent looks, 3PMSF rated, but friendlier than the K02. I'll be interested to hear how the tire stacks up after people put some miles on them.

Looks like a good new option from BFG. Notable highlights directly from BFG -https://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/auto/tires/trail-terrain-t-a

ENGINEERED TO EXPLORE: The good road in isn't always the good road out.

It’s not your average daily driver. The BFGoodrich® Trail-Terrain T/A® tire is designed to resist chipping and tearing in occasional gravel road usage. The serrated shoulder design is optimized for soft-soil traction in light off-pavement situations without compromising road noise.

Seems like this tire emphasizes snow and wear qualities, with a bit of adventure capability rolled in. I would agree with some of the assessments above. Something like an solid overlanding tire, more aggressive than highway tires, but not so aggressive that it trades off some core passenger tire qualities. It's not looking to be a benchmark A/T tire, but a bolder option than standard H/T tires.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that this tire in ISO-Metric size 285/60R18 116H has a 130 mph speed rating! I'd feel much more comfortable on the highway with this tire than any A/T with a Q (99 mph) or R (106 mph) speed rating - which are most of the tires discussed on IH8MUD.

@2020HE Keep the reports on real world usage coming. This looks like an interesting possibility for my use, given I'm either on pavement or on sand with my LC. I need a comfortable tire with the least possible noise (other family members insistence) and don't need/want E rated tires.

~ 7psi more tire pressure (harshness), reduced mileage, increased weight..

I've been running the 285/70/17 BFG AT KO2 (load C) LT tires for the last 80k miles or so across both of my LC200 and my previous 4runner. For my use case I would rate them 1-10 as follows. I also included my perfect tire, and my uneducated guess and the Trail Terrain. To my eyes, it looks like it would probably be a better fit for me. I don't know, maybe I give it a try. What y'all think?

Radar/spider chart! This is gold buddy. I often do analysis and assessments for trade studies and these charts are magic to convey understanding or facilitate discussion so qualities are not conflated. Love that you have your ideal tire there. I think many would agree a well balanced tire that has strong overall performance, often in diametric qualities, is what we're looking for. Technology makes that possible today in a single tire. Whereas older designs had significant trades.

I bet this tire would work great for a land cruiser's intended purpose. Outside of mud, where would it suck?

occasional gravel road usage...

I must be in the supposed 1% that goes on dirt roads regularly, and offroad whenever I can. This tire wouldn't cut it for my uses. I'm sure it would be fine for reasonably well maintained roads.

If I ever took my 200 up to or over 100 mph, I'd be worried about more than my tire rating...

It's not a matter of driving over 100 mph, it's a matter of safety margin when travelling at legal highway speeds under adverse conditions (like summer heat in the desert). As ambient temp rises, tires have a harder time dissipating heat. This leads to heat buildup and potential tire failure. One of the criteria used to meet any given Speed Rating is a tire's ability to dissipate heat. A tire with a 130 mph Speed rating will be able to dissipate heat better than a tire with a Q or R Speed Rating.

Thus why I said I would be "more comfortable" on the highway with a tire that has a higher Speed Rating.

Doesn't necessarily have to be desert heat conditions, either. Suppose, for whatever reason, one of your tires is running a little low on pressure. A tire with a higher Speed Rating would be more forgiving of the heat buildup caused by the low pressure than a tire with a lower Speed Rating.

Given the choice, I'm all for more safety margin.

But hey, this is the internet, feel free to make fun of this as well.
