New 8 speed transmission...

I had the dealer install the SW update in mid February and although it fixed the issue of rough shifting when cold and in some cases the gear hunt, when at a lower speed (5-10mph) harsh shift is still there and I can recreate it almost every time.

When did you get this updated software installed? I am thinking of going back to the dealership and get the service manager with me to witness it and request the same as you did; whatever updated ETC software version there is.

Just got my LC back from the dealership this afternoon and service manager said that it has the latest version of ECM programming, dated July 13, 2017 Rev 1.
As stated before, while this revision resolves the issue of harsh shifting when cold, and "computer confusion" regarding gear selection in some situations, it still doesn't resolve the issue of harsh shift between 1st and 2nd at low speed and feathering the gas pedal (mimicking bumper-to-bumper traffic in downtown). From stop or speed below 5mph, feather the gas pedal and see if you get this shock between 1st and 2nd gear, and was able to recreate it while the tech was in the car with me. I'd like to know if others owners are having the same problem and hopefully not the ECM in my LC.

I have the harsh shift from 1st to 2nd at low speeds in my 2018 200. I do not think it is your ECM, it is the software.

Hey everyone,

I have a 2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad with the 6 speed transmission. I have the exact same issue you have all been having with your 8 speed. I've had the computer reflashed multiple times with the TSBs that came out and it still shifts hard and hunts for gears. The main issue is climbing hills on the highway or sometimes acting almost like it's slipping.

Either way, while I'm currently hunting for a 200 series I noticed that in the 16+ LC, Toyota introduced the 8 speed with the same sort of wording and praise as they did with the 2016 Tacoma's transmission. I wondered if perhaps there were similar issues and it looks like there were.

Just google "2016 tacoma transmission" and you'll get plenty of hits.

I'm thinking software (shift points) across the board is the issue and the TSBs still don't fully fix it. I also tend to drive around with ECT on and that definitely helps. Heading into the mountains, I don't let it shift above 4th.

Anyways, I hope this sheds a little more light from another Toyota fan.

Dealer did flash on my 16 today and didn’t work. They have a call into Toyota and already talking replacing the tranny. See what happens. They are waiting for Toyota to respond on next step

So I ended up getting a 2017 LC. The Tranny is pretty smooth, there is an occasional clunk (very minor) when coming to a stop abruptly. Nothing like my 2016 Tacoma.

The clunk is not tranny by the drive that just need greasing up.

I just had the additional March patch done on my 16 that was mentioned earlier. It is as smooth as it was before, but I hope it makes a difference somewhere. The dealer didn't give me hard time when told him to connect tech stream and update.

It’s largely tied to fuel mileage. Computer is instantly asking itself whether it will get better fuel mileage dropping a gear or two. Drives me crazy on the newer cars. I’d rather them hold gear and maybe use a little more fuel going up a grade than downshifting every single time

So Toyota is replacing the tranny. Honestly I just asked for the update and the dealership pushed for the replacement because they didn’t like the way it felt. Hopefully get the truck tomorrow.

So after all that the tranny got worse. Apparently Toyota was aware that the reman tranny have been no good and right now it is in the shop getting a new new tranny right off the assemble line. Hopefully I get the truck back tomorrow

Wow...Are you getting info from a level above the dealer? By the time it gets to the service writer, it’s like the game telephone on steroids.

I said it earlier in this thread, Toyota DID NOT thoroughly test this transmission for this application. They’re playing the numbers game like the Big 3 do here.

Shame on them.

Basically yes because the tech called the help engineer dept and they tried a few more things with no fix so they called the regional rep who didn’t even want to drive the truck and authorized a brand new tranny rather then a remanufactured one. Service writer told me that apparently Toyota been having issues and are aware of it. Gave no problem to authorizing the parts or repairs.

Wow to me also! 2 transmission jobs! Sharp contrast to my local dealer. When I complained about the shift confusion last month, the service guy blew me off and said “Check back next year and maybe Toyota will have a firmware update.”

Wow, having driven a 2017 Tacoma for the better part of last year and dealing with the rough shifting and grear hunting, I can confirm the 2013 Land Cruiser has the same hunting gear behavior, but I will say the shifting is much smoother (on my 6 speed). Was thinking about a 2nd LC with the 8 speed transmission, but hearing that there are similar issues to the complaints about the Tacoma makes me wonder if waiting for the 2020 refresh is the way to go.

They happened to have another 2016 in for service and the tech could clearly feel the difference in mine. So they pushed for it with basically no resistance. Should be done tomorrow and hoping for the best result but we will see
