Has it got shift kit , Is the detent going into forth ,do you have a kick down installed ,did you put at least 400 gals of oil in it ( converter takes a lot) , Is it wired right. All these or any one of these will give you this symptom. If the kick down is not adjusted correctly say goodbye to your rebuild if you,ve put many miles on it.

is the 4th gear pressue switch installed and wired correctly?

i would call the transmissions shop who rebuilt it and go from there.

Nope. an independant trans shop. Lasted 60 miles. Going back on Monday I guess. I have a small vacuum activated switch which is supposed to tell the trans to shift to 4th. I drove it this morning and it now wont shift out of 1st. What the he** is going on?

the vacuum switch controls lockup, not overdrive.

if it's not shifting out of first, then i'd have to assume that the throttle valve is stuck. that's usually due to contamination hanging up the valve as the clearance in there is very tight and needs to be.
pop the hood, push down firmly on the exposed portion of the tv cable and then let it snap back into place. do this a couple of times. hopefully that'll free up the valve enough to get it to work for a little while, at least long enough to get it back to the shop. call them, they might want to get it towed back to them to prevent any other possible damage by driving it that far.......

if the tv wire is not adjusted right the tranny pressure will be way out of wack and could ruin the tranny.good luck

tv cable is on right side of tranny and hooks to carb and adjusts pressure as throttle increases .also od is electric there is a plug on the left side of tranny for the od plus you need some other parts to make it work.we run 700r4s in our mud trucks but dont use overdrive.google gm 700r4 and you should be able to learn everything good luck

not quite.

the plug on the driver side of the transmission case right behind the shift linkage is for torque converter lockup and has absolutely nothing to do with overdrive.
overdrive is a 4th gear in the transmission. lockup is a function of the torque converter.

the tv cable runs from the throttle body or carb ( right below the throttle cable ) to the passenger side of the trans, close to where the dip stick tube goes thru the case.

You have to hold the throttle wide open and adjust the tv cable from there ,usually by depressing a button on the cable which will alows the tv cable to become in sink with the throttle cable.
