Howdy! The family and I just moved back to Tucson from boom town ND. Along the way I lost the camper and pickup in a nasty accident. We're just fine, no injuries. However, I do need to replace the pickup and have decided on a 60 I found locally. Things I need to do immediately are OME heavy, knuckle rebuild and Aisin rebuild. I was thinking maybe a desmog retaining the stock mainfold and carb. It Idles like junk, but runs well. Other things on the list (if I can get the wife onboard) lockers, snorkle and recovery gear. Although I've had one or two LCs, and have done a desmog on a past 60 (webber and header, nightmare exhaust leaks) I've never lifted one or did lockers myself. I had labor priced at Desert Rat for the lift and lockers, @ $1200. Is Desert Rat a good place, or is there somewhere one of you guys could recomend, maybe where I could get the rough idle sorted as well? Aside from taking the kids camping, gold paning and exploring the beautiful state of Arizona, it will be my daily driver so I need it to be reliable and the suspension needs to be sorted and the steering tight. Thank you in advance for any guidance and direction!

A little bit of a project. I think I over paid a little at $8500, but I knew that upfront. It has the h55f, new interior, decent winch and bumpers and sliders, so it was easier to justify.

I drove that truck. To solve your main concerns, You'll need to have the carb rebuilt and all new tie rods. Chk the popping noise when in 4wd and turning too. Otherwise a good platform to fine tune into a nice truck

Welcome to AZ

I thought at first birfields but then more from either the front driveline or the tcase? is it still doing it or not?

I can't tell. I figured it needs u-joints. I'd be pretty bummed if I was in for a t-case. I've got just enough budgeted for everything I noticed and that would eat it up...I didn't figure a guy would do a h55f swap and neglect the t-case. I'm embarrassed to say when I drove it last week I didn't check the 4wd and meant to check it today before money traded hands, however forgot. How difficult is a rebuild?

I'm suspecting the front ujoints imo. It stopped making noise after doing it after a while...wondering if it hadn't been used in 4wd for a while and they're dried out?

Get in some dirt, put in 4wd with hubs locked and start doing slow and tight figure 8's and see if its still there?

I'll check it here in a minute. I think rather than doing lockers, I'm going to price out labor on the t-case rebuild (if it needs it), might as well do the 5spd while I'm in there. I figure if I do the lift myself, that will help save some coin. Anyone here recommend a good place for the running gear rebuild and knuckle rebuild?

I will say this, I don't believe I was deceived in buying this truck. The former owner seemed to love it and seemed like a great guy., I don't think he would have know it had any issues major and if he did I'd like to believe he would have told me. I buy cars with my head and I buy LCs with my heart, which is never good, lol.

Took it to a Aastro transmisson and George (who's worked on many a LC) seems to think a h55 is fine with the exception of very mild gear noise in 4th. He does however want to do a compression check and look over the carb.

check the transmission mount: a bad one can be a possibility. look over the simple items before committing to rebuilding

Transmission mount or motor mount can cause the jumping out of gear, don't ask how I know.

Awesome! I will look into that. I guess it would be inaccurate to say it "jumps" out of gear, more like quietly slips out on decel, on occasion. The guy at Aastro did not seem concerned, of course he wants my $1k just to tear it down and look inside, but he didnt see a need to go in. He seems to have a solid knowledge of vintage cruisers and genuine desire to get it running right for me.

To update, compression is in normal ranges. George is doing a motor vac, to clean out the entire motor, intake and head of any carbon or sludge, full tune up, timing adjust and carb adjust. Turns out it has some minor intake and exhaust leaks which is being addressed as well. All this for around $1k and we still don't know if the carb needs rebuilding. As long as it runs like a 150k mile 2f should when he's done, I'm happy. I guess I'll know more on the carb next week.

just fyi, when I saw it, the base of he carb was actively leaking fuel and it didn't idle much at all. It appears like he must of fixed that carb from when I saw it and you got it (about 10 days apart).

The smell of gas was strong under the hood.

by th way did you ever find out if the transmission mount was broken?

I hope this tune-up includes a check and adjust for the valves. Something that is often missed on F/2F motors.

Do you happen to know the book time on a vavle adjust? I hate to bring it as aastro is spendy, however George is very detailed oriented and thorough...he seems to really know his way around a LC, or he's a slick talker, lol. I think I may try to press him to include the valve adjust.
