Hey All,

So a few weeks ago, I bought a new 60. I'm new to the whole 4x4 thing. I've only ever had small sports cars. By small I mean tiny. My new Cruiser dwarfs the Fiat in my driveway! It's a bit strange getting used to both the speed difference and the drivers sitting height!!

I must confess, I'm guilty of making two road trips with it already yet haven't posted any pictures or given the stories. I drove over to Port Townsend and all the way around the Puget Sound, putting on roughly 1500 miles in my first week of ownership!! Drove through Snoqualmie pass in the few hours it was opened and helped two motorists after their car accidents. I guess if a truck needs a name, this one's Lucky. I can't count how many deer I've already avoided!

This weekend I went out to Helena for my sister's high school basketball tournament. She got 3rd!! Saw someone in a gray Cruiser, I think it was a 60, but didn't look closely may have been a 62. If you're reading this.. was on my way to Staggering Ox, good food!

I was hoping to stop in Missoula today and see a 60 that is being parted out, but was witness to an accident on the pass and decided to help out. After the whole ordeal I decided heading home and calling it a weekend sounded a bit better. Driver was drunk, had a pretty good concussion and had some serious issues with his wife and new fiancee (yes, I worded that correctly). Not sure what you call the Highway Patrol out here in Montana (called them Troopers in WA and HP in CA so...) but they took almost two hours to get to the scene. I'd say that was pretty quick considering I was in the middle of absolutely nowhere and then off road a few hundred feet!

At any rate, I'm still guilty of not posting pictures. As soon as I can find the camera cord I'll get those up. I'm loving the 60, and am probably close to 2500 miles on it already!

The thing is running great, these road trips were my test for her. Drove through torrential rain, heavy winds, some 200 miles of white outs, dodged deer, slept in the back three times, and helped a few people out of some tough times. All in all, I'm impressed.

As a new owner I do, of course, have a couple of questions..

On my last few vehicles I have installed an Electric Water Pump and cleaned up the engine bays from smog, thus eliminating an entire pulley system. Has anyone done this with their 60? I know in my other cars it's made a huge performance difference both in the arena of power as well as in gas consumption. These mods required a bit of tuning and playing with the carb, naturally, but I found the EWP in particular to make a big difference on how the engine ran. It was like turning the air conditioner on and off in a mid 90s vehicle!

This is the pump I used, it took me roughly an hour to install in a Fiat the first time I bought one:

Davies, Craig EWP High Performance and Racing Electric Water Pump Kits

I used the smaller of the two pumps available, and think if I went this route for the Cruiser, I might choose the latter.. Any thoughts or ideas? Oh and the Land Cruiser wiring system is a true God send compared to Fiat! You guys have it easy!!

Any ideas on finding a front seat, or recovering the upholstery? I've got the brown stock interior, and while at first I didn't like it. I have to admit, it's almost growing on me (shoot me now?) and am looking to keep it at this point! I've only dealt with recovering leather/faux leather seats though, and I'm not sure how cloth differs, if at all.

Anyone in the Kalispell, MT area?

Anyone dealt with VA trying to get educational benefits recently and have advice? :bang:

Anyone in the Air Force, Army or Navy..? :flipoff2:

Hoorah Marine Corps! (Sep. Oct 2007) :D

God Bless the Lot of you!

Welcome to 'MUD! :flipoff2:

Post some pics.

There are a huge amount of options for the front seat. Replacing the worn out driver's seat is a very common thing to do. A few that come to mind are - SOR (Specter Off-Road, Inc.-Landcruiser Parts & Accessories) has new foam and cloth upholstery cover, IPOR seats (Iron Pig Off Road : Toyota 4WD experts), Corbeau seats, Recaro, Hunsaker, seats from an MR2, etc. I guess a main question is do you want new, reupholstered, or used? How much do you want to spend? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? I love my Corbeau Baja RS but it is definitely not for everyone. Do you want a direct bolt-in or can you fab up a custom bracket? Do you like more the racing style seat like AIC from Summit Racing? Lots of things to consider. Some people seem to really like the replacement foam from SOR but other people complain that it is too expensive for what it is. Searching old threads will give you lots of pics and options for what other people have done.

Welcome!:flipoff2:

What year is your rig? Depending on the condition of the seats
and you truck in general, you might want to just buy aftermarket
seats. Mine are stock, in good condition, but if they were not,
I'd check out some aftermarket seats. Go to a place that sells
them and sit in a few before you buy.
We need to see some pics. Buy a silver star and post some pics
of your rig.

Ahh.. You bring up some important questions Duck!

I'm 6'3 170.. bad part is, I ruptured 2 discs (L3-L4 L4-L5) in Dec. '05 I'm young and, I think, still healing; so hopefully the pain doesn't last forever (or at least goes away for a few years)!

The stock seats have done pretty well for me. I think if I were to swap out seats it would have to be an adjustable (reclining) seat, but at this point I would probably lean toward re-upholstery. Unfortunately, I think the stock cloth pattern would be hard to find/reproduce. If I were to put in new seats or vinyl/leather upholstery I suspect I would find myself wanting to redo the entire interior!

Price.. well I would prefer to keep it on the lower side, while keeping in mind you typically get what you pay for. Any repairs/mods will come out of my VA disability funds and I am trying to save up money in case something major is needed. I mean.. it is a used 'new' car with 190k....

Oh yeah, and to beat everyone else to the punch, this thread is useless without pictures (TTIUWOP)!! Look for them tomorrow!

It is a White '87

Although it is not the low cost option, I really have liked the replacement of the seat bottom with the SOR foam one. It is about $150 but is an easy fit. All you need is basic wrenches and some hog rings and hog ring pliers. I had to do something on top of that because the PO was a sloppy smoker and burned holes in the upholstery. So, I got a set of Wet Okoles for the front seats. Love them. You can match the yellow/gold Fj60 interior pretty well with them.

Welcome Noob! You need to post some pictures of your rig...or dont post again!! Just kidding....hope you have fun with it! 60's RULE! :D

Jon,
Welcome to Mud!

Never seen one of those electric water pumps. Sounds interesting. Of course there's still a power steering pump and smog pump if you're a mission to eliminate pullys/belts.

Oh yeah.... Thanks for your service!

Later,
Butt

I hear ya on the back problems. I have some serious disc problems myself. From the long term perspective, I wouldn't skimp on the seats. They can make a big difference. If you want to keep the interior stock looking then I guess the SOR foam is the way to go. If there are no rips in your fabric I think you can reuse it. SOR also sells a fabric kit that doesn't match the pattern of the fabric but does have a close color.

You might be interested in a racing style seat like APC. Here is a link to D'Animals install -

https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/141416-grey-ghost-gets-new-seats.html

I don't think Summit Racing carries them any more but you can get similar seats off of eBay.

As far as the electric water pump goes, I would save your money for things that might break - leaky radiator, power steering pump, hoses, exhaust leak at the EGR pipe, etc. CruiserDan is a great way to get OEM parts for cheaper.

Pictures!!

So.. I got the pictures uploaded last night, just didn't make the time to post them here! Here is a lor to the Flickr Web Album, which contains much higher quality pictures, and a few more than I'm adding here.. Land Cruiser and Fiat <--Cruiser porn here!!

As you can see, the clear coat is comorg off the drivers side. There is also a few spots of rust just startorg to form on the back window (just underneath). I have a feelirg this is startorg from the inside actualty, as the rear window washer isn't hooked up property, and it's leakorg on the inside. But I'm not eager to find out with the ol' screwdriver just yet... I'll be lookorg for a new back window/frame very soon!

Other than that, very little to no rust anywhere! This car was moved up to Montana from New Mexico not too lorg ago. There's more rust on my Fiat and that came from the upper NW! Once I find a good body shop, both these vehicles will be seeorg a smalt make over!
