I posted a question about a constant clicking noise I heard while on the highway only with the windows open. This "clicking" doesn't happen at around town speeds. Someone was nice enough to respond and say that it was my u-joints. As I dug deep I kept reading about birfiled clicks. Could this really be my issue and not a u-joint? There is no clicking when I'm turning. Any ideas? Thanks guys

I doubt anyone can tell you for sure what your problem is in a forum post. If you have isolated the problem to the front axle and you cannot recreate it in your garage on jack stands spinning the wheels, or if you are sure its not something inside the brakes or the dust shield, then you have a decision to make. Either pop your cherry and tear into it or drive it until something breaks. You could also drop your driveshaft and take it to a driveline shop and have them test it....then you'd know if its u-joints.

What the heck is that about. I come to this forum seeking advice from knowledgable people and they have helped me out. Now I get your car sucks. Not only is that uncalled for it's flat out rude. Thanks

Oh, that's just Stuckey. He's like a fart, he appears without warning and totally ruins the moment. Nobody takes credit for him; he will fade away shortly.

Umm, licruiser, before you write us all off do a search on stuck in ga's previous threads and you will see that the rest of us react to him a lot like you. In fact after all the statements he's made about reforming, I find it hard to believe that is Josh posting and not one of his high school buds using his login. If it is Josh, I won't bother scolding him because it is useless.

Anyway, to try to answer your post, I do not think it is birfields. Birfs click when you turn and tend to click most when you turn hard from a standing start. I have never heard of birfs clicking when driving in a straight line although I guess it's possible. Highway speeds only noise is tough. I also thought u-joints tended to make noise when you coasted under idle (no power to shaft allows the play). Have you tried driving with a passenger switiching from seat to seat and testing whether the noise is louder out of any particular window? Also, try driving slower beside buildings or a solid fence at slower speeds and see if you can hear it at slower speeds then too (the wall will magnify the noise).

Also does the clicking vary with speed or rpms? Is the clicking a high rpm ratatat or more a clunking or popping? Like a baseball card in bike spokes? Seriously, a more detailed description would help.

Finally, to take a wild ass guess, I would check to see if the heat shields on the exhaust pipes just in front of the catyltic converters are loose, and also see if any part of your exhaust has any play.

I was going there with my next write-up when I got distracted by Stuckey's assinine post. I would crawl under the truck with it cool and start touching and pushing and looking for something loose. As suggested by Semlin, give us more info. Also check the bolts that hold your brake calipers on. If they are loose even the slightest bit and the caliper is able to move or vibrate, that could cause noise.

Worn drive flanges can do this also

Thanks for the heads up on stucky. The exact sound is one of putting a baseball card in the spokes of a bike. That hits the nail on the head. This weekend was the first time I drove with all the windows open and the sound is only around at highway speeds. There is no clucking or popping. It also seems that it only gets slightly faster clicking noise as I go faster. I will check the heat shields tonight. Thanks for an honest response Semlin & Elmariachi

I haven't been able to gather if you have confined it to front or rear other than you began to suspect a birfield. You might try lifting up on the emergency brake handle a bit when you hear it to see if that kills it. You could have some voodoo working on the mechanisms inside the rear hubs.

ok, check the rubber/plastic engine curtains inside the front wheel wells and see if one of the grommit fasteners is loose or something is flapping.

These 2 back to back made me laugh for the first time today.

Man, I'm still smiling

No guys I swear that wasn't me. Someone must have gotten on my name I swear. It could be someone at school. If you see any posts like that just ignore them. It is not me. It pisses me off that someone wrote that on here. Please forgive me LIcruiser. The last thing I want to do is piss someone off and that wasn't me. I love this forum and have gotten better. You guys got to believe me. Now I got to go find the douchbag who did this and kick his ass.

Well was that you in the other thread 15 minutes before this post asking Norcal Doug sarcastically if he could read after he politely warned you Slee might be out of slider stock (which he was)? If so how do I tell bad stuckey from good stuckey if the content is the same? Wait how do I know it's you now? Could this be a reasonable guy using Stuckey's login? Maybe his parents are trying protect the family reputation. the mind boggles at the possibilities. Stuckey from now on take a photo of yourself holding today's newspaper while posting and then post the photo immediately afterwards so we know it was you.

No hard feelings stucky. If we were in school together I'd probably do it to you. Anyway I've isolated it to the righthand side and I believe the front. I proof positive that the noise only comes 45 and over and when I let my foot off the gas. I intilly thought it was upon accel but I was incorrect. U-joint?

did you eliminate the engine curtains? If so, crawl under the thing and see if you can make the u joints move up and down or side to side by reaming on them. A certain amount of fromt to back play is ok, but take note of how much you get.

You make a bed, and then you sleep in it....

Ok I am sick and tired of this sh!t. If you guys don't want to believe me fine. I am tired of trying to defend myself. So you guys take and leave what you will. Im done.
