windshield cracked during snowmaggedon*

My neighbor the truck expert recommended a Toyota part because of his experience with off brand in his LCs.

Toyota dealerships are impossible. Can’t even get an appointment scheduled !

Any suggestions ?!!

Call around to high end dealers and see who they use. If there is consensus, call them on your accord to setup an appointment. Order OEM glass through the dealer.

AVOID ****ING SAFELITE. THEY ARE HORRENDOUS.

Most dealers outsource the labor to a contractor but buy OEM glass. Any good glass shop should be able to do the install, but you wnat to be picky about the glass you buy.

Thanks but how should I be picky?
Is there a specific model number etc for OEM?

I highly recommend Lexus of Austin. They use OEM glass only, much cheaper than Toyota dealers. Plus you will get a loaner :)

I can connect you with my service advisor at Lexus of Austin. He has been the one I have worked with for past 8 years.

Are you sure they (the dealer) actually do the work? Most, that I know of anyway, farm it out (safelite, etc)
They have a independent contractor they use, but they warranty the work and take complete responsibility for the work.

I think this guy works out of Dallas. Maybe make a road trip to see him or ask if he ever makes it your way:

That is the level of work I’d want done on mine. Thanks a TON for the contact info.. I’ve seen the video but couldn’t find it again. Have a crack growing on mine and will want it done by summer, and a trip to Dallas for the job is totally reasonable to get that quality of install.

Thanks for this suggestion, I’m in Dallas and have reached out to him.
Please post with your experience if you have him do the work. I spoke on the phone and he seems great, but I voiding find time to get up there until late July or so. OEM panel and some of the clips sitting in my living room right now waiting on that..

Where did you get the OEM panel? Mine has already been replaced from before I owned it. It’s not OEM now, not sure what to replace it with.

Honestly don’t even know options, haven’t ever done a replacement before.

At least a few years ago when I was doing the research it was either OEM or Pilkington for 200s. Mine has the latter in it, and I don’t like it. Vin window doesn’t line up, the wiper rain sensor bracket doesn’t fit right, and the wiper blade defrost strips are useless. There is unconfirmed speculation that the OE panel is thicker and tempered to a higher standard.. I do know on other cars aftermarket glass seemed quick/easy to bullseye/crack.. but pilkington does have a good reputation in general. I just feel mine isn’t as good as OEM for the reasons listed above.

I used my go-to discount toyota parts source, located in south Austin: Find Toyota Parts at Discount Toyota Parts - AutoNation Toyota South Austin - https://parts.autonationtoyotasouthaustin.com/
Not sure how much shipping would be though. I got the panel for my 2013 for $580 and picked it up, list is $870.

Any toyota dealer should be able to order it.. or I’m sure Luis could get one for you if you specify OEM. Can’t speak to the cost though. He’ll have to get other little clips and strips and things too.

If you don’t want the hassle then go to Lexus of Austin, they are the cheapest for OEM glass including safelite or local installers.

If you are okay ordering the parts, AutoNation Toyota South Austin has the cheapest parts plus $5.99 local pick up.

I can connect you with an amazing local installer which Lexus and Toyota use. They charge $150-$175 for installation including the urethane glass

What year are those numbers for?

Also I’ll be trying to get that install connect in a month or so. Have my panel sitting inside my house.. but a trip to finish in the meantime

Resurrecting this thread-

I’m taking my 2017 into Lexus of Austin this week for a windshield replacement thanks to everyone’s advice on here!

They’re charging me ~$1,300 all in, does that price sound like it’s in the right ballpark? Also, do they replace the surrounding liner that goes up to the roof and/or the cowling? The previous owner used a 3rd party windshield and whoever installed it didn’t install the cowl correctly in addition the liner that runs up to the roof is sticking up a little in the driver side so I’m hoping they’ll replace and fix it all so there’s nothing popping up/not sitting correctly.

TIA!

Sounds like a decent price. I'd ask specifically whether they'll be replacing the side moulding. The top moulding has to be done so not much point asking about that, and with it being a dealer I'd assume they'll use the correct parts.

Even with a quality installer I'd monitor carefully for water on the passenger floorboard the next time you have a carwash or rain. And remain diligent.. sometimes it depends on whether the vehicle is parked nose up or down on a hill. Reusing the cowl really seems to be a risk factor.. you may be fine, but verify before you trust it long-term.
