Guys, I sadly learned that the '74 'transition' year x-fer case that came attached to my H42 probably only has a 1.99 low range, instead of the intended 2.31 ratio. Does anyone know if I can swap the input shaft from the 'transition' case into one of my 3 speed x-fer cases so I can get the 2.31 low range ratio?

How many 's is this job? Or, if you are willing to help, how many 's will it take?

I know there are conversion kits available, but I'd like to try and keep the costs down with all the body work and PS install also being done this summer.

Thanks in advance for any advice, useful or otherwise.

Jon,

It's been a while but I don't recall an input shaft on the xfr; I believe it's the output on the tranny instead and the spline count is different. That's why you need the "transition" input gear for the xfr.

There's a reprint magazine article in the tech section where Marlin shows how to identify each version xfr case. Check there to be sure of what you have.

Thanks Bob, I'm afraid of what might happen if I go to Marlin's site...might walk away with a crawl box of sorts instead. I'll have my wife lock up the credit cards and then maybe I'll brave it.

That's the article that gave me the bad news that I didn't have the 2.31 low range in my 'transition' year x-fer case.

Looks like I'll have to open my 4 speed, and the 3 speed and transition year cases and compare parts....unfortunately, when it comes to the innards of a tranny or xfer, to me "parts is parts".

Me aggree with JS 4spd case mo bettah. Split case even mo bettah. Your not going to notice the slight reduction in gear. Wheel speed and momementum are what you need for a mostly stock truck

The older cases are more brittle.

I'd put in a split case with reduced gears.

The complete Orion is no longer being made but IIRC you can still get the gears. Talk to Vic at Advanced Adapters, he's super cool.
