So, as the above title says, I am in need of some advice. I have surfed the forums here, and in a few other sites and decided to call on the mud( seemingly better crowd of guys) and so far as I can tell no one has answered this question

One backstory first, I picked up a 92 80 series landcruiser for a wooping 400 bucks. A friend owns a shop and had a guy bring it in with a nasty knock. Said he ran it out of oil coming back from portland. His oil filter fell off. Fired it up real quick and it is diagnosed as a head knock. Got it home and took off the valve cover and every valve is extremely loose. Tightened the valves just a lil bit per valve(not the correct way, but taking out a hell of a lot of slop) and the loud knock became a quite knock. But a knock nun the less

since winter is coming I need a good 4x4. So my question....

Can a 2f regular (not a 2fe) out of a 62 be put into the 80? While the 3fe is being repaired I happen to have a 2f on hand and wondered about the complexity of doing a quick swap so I can drive it. I have a spare hood so I was thinking I of chopping up the current hood and doing a cowl like segment since the 2f block is a taller block then the 3fe.

Since I travel I happen to away from the beast atm, and my winter project is the 3fe so it will be going back into the 80

My 92 has had a light knock since it rolled off the assembly line. Drive it like you stole it.

And don't even think about putting a 2F in an 80. Waste of time.

Yep. Picking up a used 3FE to rebuild while you are driving your existing one is a very good idea. The 3FE is bombproof. It can take an obscene amount of abuse. I've done it first hand. I know of guys that have run them out of oil. You name it. Or just sell me the 80 and go buy another one. :)

Lol, I like the drive it like you stole it idea.

The main reason I was thinking a 2f is because in bend oregon, where I live, I can't find any 3fe motors. Not any parts either. And the only shop that will touch it wants a 1000 to overhaul the head and that doesn't include parts.

I may just drive it like ya said. I am having my brother adjust the valves correctly today. And we will see where to go from there.

Now another question, more general, if the head is knocking what would the likely culprit be? A lifter? Maybe a rod? Or the valves themselves? Just want a guesstimate Mainly from reading or other posts you guys may have read. Something that might help point me in the right direction

Ok. Seriously, these motors were designed to run under the harshest of conditions. Third world country s***. Bad gas, questionable oil, limited maintenance. These motors sound like the offspring of a tractor and a sewing machine when they are new. Put a couple hundred thousand miles on them and that is exacerbated. Adjust the valves and drive it.

The 2F is a good motor but even less power than the 3FE. It will be a complete dog. The 3FE is seriously bombproof. Just drive it bro.

Hell if you get it to Seattle I can bring to you. I'll be driving to Redding weekend of the 5th.

I've heard that about Bend, Oregan. No roads going to or fro so you can road trip and pick a motor up from another state. No shipping companies deliver there either.

Seriously weak excuse right there. If you have time to retrofit a 2F and rebuild a 3FE, you have time to go get a 3FE from somewhere else. Or pay to have it shipped.

Lol, the reason I said a 2f is because I have one on hand, and yanking a motor and replacing is pretty easy when I have my family to help, (pay them in beer) and that's why I was asking about the drop in simplicity, but as ls1fj40 said just drive it, so I will just drive it. And do a head overhaul when I have the cash

FWIW, I've had at least 15 "mechanics" over the years tell me I have a "knock" in my 1992 3FE. I have 239k on my 80. The first time they told me I had a "knock" was at about 20k. The 3FE is not a quiet motor.

Now having said that, I have notice a little bit of lifter slap in the last couple of thousand miles. When I pick up my 2001 100 Series and 2002 4Runner for my daughter I will probably park my 80 and give her the love she deserves. I'm never getting rid of her. She leaks like a sieve so she's due for seals and all kinds of maintenance.

Or I'll just keep driving her. One of the two. Haha.

If I had a dollar for every time a 50 IQ "Harley mechanic" told me my Boxer engined bike had "piston slap", I'd retire rich.

There simply aren't that many real mechanics anymore.

See, this is why I like this forum, no one called me an idiot, and answered my questions honestly. And after the valves get adjusted correctly, well hopefully the knock goes away. I'll have my bro take a picture of all the cakes on oil on all the valves and maybe a vid of how she sounds

I wonder if you could post that and @LS1FJ40 could post his to compare and contrast.

I can do that. I'll do it sometime today.
