I want to ask anyone with a newer FJ/HJ-45-47 about the windshield wiper switch. I have a 1982 FJ45 from OZ with what I believe might have the wiper intermittent delay switch installed, only problem is I not sure if the switch is bad or what? I also found this bit of information in a 1983 owners manual.
Mine has three pull stages, and the first stage does nothing while the second and third stages work fine for wiper action (low -high). Question, can anyone tell me if the first stage is for the wiper delay setting and were the switches stock with three stages but needed a different wiper relay to make it work.
Any information is welcome. :wrench:
Thanks

I know my 7/1980 HJ45 has the two position wiper switch/motor and my 10/1983 HJ47 has the 3 position wiper switch/motor. I remember that my 2 and 3 position wiring and the wiper motors are different. I will post up some pics of the motors and switches tonight. First position on the 3 position switch should be the intermittent setting.

Hey Soot, what's up. I never even thought that this 45 had a intermittent wiper switch until I saw a old write-up on a 1983 FJ40 in Australia that mentioned the stock delay wiper switch. I am trying to learn a bit more about it before I remove the switch to examine it for possible fault. I also found this bit of information in a 1983 owners manual.
I was looking at the wiper relay and it looks like any other relay, so not too sure about the wiring going to it. If you could that would help with a photo of the relay and the wires going to it and the switch. I must ask, are they out of the truck? If not don't go to any trouble just a description would work. What's the stats on your rig, are you seeing the light at the end of the tunnel?
I just fished the LWB paint on mine last Friday so I can now say it is officially done. Ready for Mud, Will post shortly.

I've had two '84 40s with the three position wiper switch. Both of which were slightly temperamental on the intermittent setting and require a small "bump" to the switch to get it working 100% correctly. I guess they may suffer from some sort of contact problem over time.

I didn't know they had them either until I found all the bits pulled out and stored in the glove box, my father in law was going to put it into the 45 at some stage and forgot about it! My 47 is in pieces and I'm still banging away slowly on the body work, learning as I go. It's starting to get cold over/down here so I will continue the body work aiming to finish that and maybe paint dare I say the end of this year. Probably pull the front and rear diffs down and rebuild them during that time also, can't panel beat at night where I live unfortunately!

Trying to post pics now.

The 45 wiper motor is the top one and the 47 wiper motor is the bottom one. Not much difference, maybe the amount of dirt on them. I thought they were a little different but I was wrong on that one. :o Both have a single 4 pin connection.

Above is the my 47's wiper control relay showing the wiring as requested. I couldn't find the 45 wiper control relay, its in a box somewhere, just can't put my hand on it at the moment.

Delay

Wow this is some supper information and pictures. Lupdog, my switch when turned to the first position makes a buzzing noise, so that may be the problem. I will give it a smack also. I have a flight this morning SOOT, so when I get back today I will compare what I have with your photos.

Go buy some corrosion x try that .

Okay due to weather I am back a little sooner.
I started with the relay as that was the easiest to get too when comparing it to SOOTs picture, and turns out to be the culprit that was giving me the trouble. SOOT, it is the same relay and wiring as you have, except mine had a good layer of red OZ dirt caked in the housing. When I cleaned out the housing which was simple to open, and air cleaned the board, it was obvious that the contact points has seen some humidity after 31 years as they were dark in color and oxidized. Some 400 grid sand paper fitted in between the points to clean the contacts works like a charm. Very simple design, and easy to maintain ( Toyota was thinking).
I did use a bit of aircraft anti corrosion on the internal parts of the relay, and some on the switch shaft. So what might of been a bad switch was just a good bit of TLC to the relay points. Now she is working like new, and ready for that light rain that is always occurring in April here in the NW of the states. Thanks guys for the information.

Glad you have had a good outcome with just a good clean.

I don't have to give mine a smack so much as a a gentle bump in or out to reposition the switch slightly. It must have a sweet spot on the contacts.

Mine also makes that buzzing sound on the intermittent setting. More of a grinding noise than an electrical buzzing though. Maybe the gears that you have shown, (excellent pics in this thread BTW!), are not 100%, or maybe I just need to give it all a good clean and lube too.:hillbilly: I think one of my other trucks made the same noise as well. Put another job on the list

Lupdog, sorry for the delay, yeah, just remove the relay box, remove the box cover, leave power wires connected and watch what it does with power applied. The points maybe stuck in the closed position.
Good luck.
