My brake booster is leaking. My question is, is there any other booster that I can use ( reman cost 370$) if there is a rebuild shop in Houston area that would be great as well. any help would be great

I don't understand. Are you saying any 60 series brake booster will work. Mini?

Thanks for the info any mini year or is there specific years

I used a booster out of a '85 1 ton 2wd mini in my '77 FJ40. It bolted right up without any issues, just make sure you get the checkvalve for the vac source, as it's mounted to the firewall, not the booster like the factory FJ's. The best part for me was the fact that the 1 ton booster was the same diameter as my original, but less than 1/2 the thickness. This really opens up the carb and carb linkage area when working with webers or others.

I forgot to mention::: I was going to convert my back drums to discs will the booster for a mini be the best choice for the conversion also?

Took mine to our local (UT) NAPA store and they sent it to a place somewhere instate. The instate folks supposedly do power brake remans for NAPA. Don't recall the cost, but it was much less than $370.

Hey thanks all. I think I am going to try the NAPA thing first! Then if that did not work I will try the mini thing. But thanks again for the info to all.

Get a 1" bore master cylinder as well if you are going to go rear discs. The rear calipers need that extra volume, or your pedal will be squishy.;)

Ok now for the dumb questions... Where do I find a 1'' master cylinder for my truck to convert to disc all around?
How do I check to see if I have one already? (I have spare MC parts).

Thanks, Dennis

Hi All:

I recently replaced a dead drum brake booster with one from a Toyota 4wd mini-truck; at the same time swapped in a re-built '89 V-6 mini-truck master cylinder.

So far this combo has worked quite well and was not expensive at all.

Hijack: does anyone know whether the mini-truck master cylinders have a rear circuit residual valve, like the old drum brake TLC masters do?

Thanks!

I used a brake booster off of a celica with a 22re (I think it was 83-84?) from the junkyard. All the boosters from the pickups were gone so I just looked for one that was close and it ended up working. It has worked out great. $25 instead of the $300 or so for a rebuilt one.

I got mine from Marlin Crawler. It is a new Aisin unit for a non ABS FJ80. If I remember correctly this MC is from non-USA cruisers:confused: Granted I probably could have got one from a parts store for cheaper than Marlin, but I have come to the conclusion over the years that Napa parts are pieces of s*** and just don't hold up in the long run like the Toyota stuff does. My 2 cents.

BTW, I run the rear brake line/ Wilwood prop. valve to the rear port on the MC, and the front brake line to front port. This configuration has been working good.

I believe this FJ80 MC is backwards compared to a ABS unit.

It should have "1" on the casting to represent the 1" bore. BTW, I feel slightly retarded now, cause when I was taking this picture I just realized that the body of the MC has "F" and "R" casted into it, I guess that would be the brake line port designations. I must have been so excited about having brakes that work I missed that detail while installing;) I have to wonder sometimes....

You can get the non ABS 80 series master form your local Toyota dealer. I did some searching on price, and I got the best price from the dealer. It pays to know your part guy! Before I had this master, it tried all the other options (mini, V6 mini, 1 ton mini, later LC) and none of them worked very well for me. I have mini disc up front and El Darado in the rear, with NO prop. vavle, and it works well for me.

So, a dumb question... what do you hook up the wires that went to the front and rear pressure switches to from the original FJ-40 MC??? Do you just clip em'?
(Assuming you swap in the FJ-80 non-ABS MC>>)
Cheers!
