I'm installing a PS setup on my 1974 FJ40. I got a power steering gear from (I believe) another FJ40 though the seller didn't know for sure.

It bolts to my stock pedestal with no modifications, the pitman arm on it was a perfect fit to my steering arm and the rag joint is the same. I will need to shorten my steering column now by about an inch, which is also why I think it is a stock FJ40 steering gear since I read you have to shorten your steering column by an inch when using that box.

I used a JTO hose for the high pressure line that fits the Toyota gearbox on one end and a Saginaw pump on the other. Perfect fit. Here is my problem: I need the return line nipple that goes in the steering box on one end and into a rubber hose on the other end that runs to the cooler/pump. The port for this is clearly smaller than the port for the high pressure line. The HP line is a 16mm or 17mm fitting, as best I can tell this is about a 14mm fitting with (I think) a 1.5 thread.

The part I need is item 64 in the attached diagram. Does anyone have an idea what this steering gear is out of and where I can find the correct return nipple?

You can use part number. It's a return nipple for a Tundra but it will fit.

I would be surprised if you can't find something that will fit in your local parts store. Most 80s Toy trucks use the same fitting for the return. Most newer cars are also metric. I have seen them sold online too. I would try Carquest. Or a junkyard , try one from 88 toy 4x4.

I got mine from my local toyota dealership. I told them I need the return line fitting for a mid 80's minitruck or 4 runner. They had it in stock which was probably overly lucky

Any toyota from the 80's with powersteering will have that fitting. I pulled one from an old celica

Guys,

I've been to every AutoZone, Checker, Carquest and NAPA store within a 50 mile radius of my house. None of them have a metric flare fitting to fit this. I went to the Yota Yard in Denver and he had a huge pile of mini-truck PS gears and on all of them, the return line port was the same size as the high pressure port. I also went to the Toyota dealer and they couldn't tell me what size the fitting was they could get. They wanted me to pay for it whether it fit or not since it was a special order.

Can any of you confirm that the part numbers you're giving me are for one of these smaller size fittings and not just the 16mm or 17mm version?

Yota Yard gave you some bad info. They are different and I believe the PN listed above is the correct fitting for what you need. I was lucky to have the return line fitting on my box when I got it.

Thanks everyone for the quick inputs, I'll checkout that part number to see if it works for me.

I just measured one from an 84 mini box.
16x 1.5 mm nut size 17mm with 10mm tube. Can you measure the diameter of the hole and thread ?

Call Cruiser Dan!

If I take a 5/16 SAE return nipple I can thread it in and it is just a little loose. When I stick that nipple in my bolt gauge it is just a little loose in the 14mm hole. So thats why I think it is 14mm x 1.5. It is definitely smaller than the high pressure port. I sent all of the part number info to Cruiser Dan via PM and will call him tomorrow to see if he can help. Thanks

Does Cdan sell hoses already made up? I'm still in need of a pulley and pump but don't want to spend a hun for a dag-gone pulley. Whos got decent cheap pulleys and pumps??

Usually Mark's Offroad is a good place for used pulleys either in narrow or wide configuration

Success!

So I checked with Cruiser Dan and all of the part numbers provided are no longer available from Toyota.

I finally went to a bigger junk yard and just started going up and down all of the aisles. I finally found a 1983 Dodge D50 mini truck, which was made by Mitsubishi. It looked like the right size fitting so I snagged it. Turns out it is a 14mm x 1.5 fitting and this one worked fine with minimal jerry rigging.

Thanks for everyones help with trying to get this sorted out.
