Now thats a really great idea Mike! Just need to figure a way to keep the "hoops" steady, or were you thinking the fly would do that once the tension was on there?

Edit: I'd still really like to see the set up for your CTT sometime too

well technically the longer the pipe that slides over the yakama bar the more stable the hoops would be. however that said you probaby dont want to run 64in cross bars soo id say measure the length of the cross bars on the outside of the towers. say 4 inches or so and run that amount. i really think if the rain fly was sewen right i.e. like a cover or box that would decrease the chances that wind will catch it and pull it. also make sleeping in windy conditions at night quieter.

Nate. if you want to mess around with rain flies some time on a weekend let me know as it wil be good resources for my ID protfolio and also good info for when i do my awning.

also for those lookign at materials take a look at military surplus sites as they have great quality tarps and tent material for way cheap. also fastners and cords.

well, these hoops would be hugely cantilevered, wouldn't they, unless you can connect them to the frame on the door side?

mike the tent opens sideways as pictured below. the hoops could only loop over the 2 ends of the yakima rack on one side of the truck. the other ends are hidden under the tent.

hmm intresting i had forgotten that your tent opens off the side. well this idea could still be used if you mounted pipe ont he out side edges so when you open it theres a place to slide your pipe into. Hell if you went that route you might even be able to get all the parts in PVC pipe adn you wouldnt need to weld them.

food for thought

that makes good sense.

Rain Fly

I'm with you guys, the fly needs improvement and the snap screw holes weaken the whole frame. I've thought of taking some conduit and splinting it in the week points of the current aluminim frame to stregthen it up a bit. As far as the fly goes, I'd too consider going in on a fly, such as a rubberized canvas. I've got two of these tents to improve.

I did have mine out on some windy nights in Death Valley. Without the rainfly, it held up fine. With the rainfly it would have flapped all night and pulled the snaps out of the aluminum poles. Kindof like a sail. I'd guess the wind gust to be around 35 mph.
