I have a HJ60 1987 with the 440F auto. I cannot find any info on how to separate the T-case from the transmission. I want to bring it somewhere to have it rebuilt. Not sure if I have the expertise to do it myself.
Please point me in the right direction.
Thank you

Basic procedure for disassembling the transfer case off of the transmission:

1. remove driveshafts
2. remove companion flanges
3. remove rear bearing retainer
4. remove transmission output shaft cover + shaft nut
5. remove rear half of case ( make sure to drain transmission and transfercase )
6. remove gears
7. unbolt front half of case

You cannot remove the transfercase without disassembling it.

Get a factory service manual first and take a good look to see if this is within your abilities. It doesn't sound like you know that the transfer case has to be disassembled to remove it. If someone else is going to rebuild it, it would probably be best just to take them the auto attached to the transfer case.

Best of luck

Tony

Thanks GLTHFJ60
I am new to 4x4 and this forum. I do not know all the terms you have used, like companion flanges.
Do you know of a schematic I could look at?
Thanks

Thanks Kynot62.
I was under there today and was hoping that I did not have to split the case. I guess I wanted the easy way out.
Do you know of a manual on line somewhere?

Do a search on this forum. I don't know where it is but the manual is on line somewhere hereabouts.
