ok in proccess of fixing dumbass move of dropping grommet into valve cover. I pulled out all of the bolt things that hold the valve cover down. How much force do I need to pry this thing off? I've got a 12" extention i've been using and that hasent done crap. am i going to need a crow bar? i counted 13 bolts that I pulled out. Am I missing a hidden one?

If it hasn't been off before or in a very long time, it can be stuck on. Try tapping it with a rubber mallet. I don't have the bolt count at my disposal. Make sure you got the one in the upper right corner under the heater valve.

Are you talking about a socket extension? I'm not sure how you would use that to lever the valve cover off.

I got it off, i used the extention as a lever and braced it in the oil cap hole. I think I'm in a bit of trouble now though... we'll see how this plays out.

God i'm an idiot

Hold it right there mister....step away from the cruiser.......you heard me, put the tools down and step away from the cruiser,.....Sounds to me like a good time for a break and brief change of scene......

If we are talking about the PCV grommet, I did the same thing. The damn thing was so hard I had to use pliers to break it appart. It did end up falling in the cover but was stopped by a flap of metal inside the VC. possibly there to deflect oil and keeping it from migrating up the PCV. Lucked out and used a needle nose to extract the grommet without having to remove the VC.

Yea I stepped away from the cruiser. I said fudge it i'm going bowling. I can get my fingers on the grommet as its in that little trap thing, but the problem is its not peices, its still whole. I need a way to cut it into peices so i can extract it. I'm out of ideas and got an engine that's half torn apart... I'm going to try and put stuff back together and then maby I can figgure something out.

super long needle nose won't reach it?

If you can see it, take a piece of wire (strip a piece of Romex or something, or a coat hanger) and make a hook in it at the end. Fish the grommet out with the hook. If it's fallen in, but still intact, it should be easy if you can grab it thru the middle with the hook.

Wow, you guys missed my "foolproof PCV valve/grommet extraction" post. For those of you still planning to do this (I'll be doing my fourth next week), here's the way I do it.

Use vice grips to get a serious grip on the valve. Then use whatever allows you to put enormous pressure upward on the vice grips and rotate the vice grips back and forth while prying upward. It takes about 30 seconds and the grommet is pulled up with the valve all in one piece. I described it better in another post last year - July/August?
