I am looking at an Fj62 (1990) with 173,000 miles. No rust. No body damage. AC blows cool, but not cold. Auto tranny shifts fine, also tranfer case. Engine seems to run a little loud (lifter noise, not knocking). The truck drives pretty tight for the miles and age. The interior is in decent shape. The owner is dead set on 2950.00 and it seems like a pretty good deal. I just have some concern about the engine noise I'm hearing. Anyone have some ideas or suggestions?

buy it and get a valve job(if thats the noise your hearing)

Buy it. THe valves probably just need to be adjusted, and this job frequently gets neglected. Look carefully for rust and rust repair. Check out the pictures posted by Brian on this forum-massive rust!

if there is truly no rust, then buy it quick. but make sure for hidden or repaired places.

Is there a noticeable clunk when shifting from drive to reverse? - worn tranny output shaft. For 3k$, its sounds like a good deal.

I have this problem, I guess to fix this problem you would replace the output shaft? How much to fix this problem?

McNamara input gear for the tcase. Costs about 400 bucks though, plus tcase rebuild parts, and that's if you do the job yourself...

valve noise

I have an `88 that has the same loud valve/injector noise. Its been posted on this board that a valve adjustment quiets it a lot. Have`nt got to that. I`ve run 5000 miles, the engine runs smoothly at 14 mpg and when I did a dry compression test all the cylinders were within a few lbs of 150.
If it idles well, accelerates smoothly and there are no transmission problems or rust, I don`t know how you could go wrong.

If it is as you describe then I would but it and not look back. People have bought rusty rigs for that price. You will no doubt do mods that will improve performance anyway so don't worry about the noise.
