UPDATE: Need a transfer case and a car trailer to carry a fj62

Anyone know where, or does someone have a transfer case for an fj62 laying around that they would like to part with? I have found a couple that have ranged from as low as $700 used and free shipping to as high as $1200 including a $250 core charge plus shipping that has been gone through.

Mine gave out on me weekend before last while I was in Mexico.

I'm also looking to either trailer my rig and tow it back up here to the states and swap the case here or get the case and go down there and replace it and drive my rig back. I would rather trailer it and do it here. So, I was wondering if anyone would have a trailer I could borrow for a weekend to go get my rig?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Howdy! Just get a good transfer case, and we will schedule the next official wrench party in Mexico!! Just make sure there is a good supply of cold, liquid refreshments available. P.S. Everyone got their passport handy?? John

That thought has crossed my mind as well. If I can't score a trailer that might be the case.

Anyone up for a trip to Mexico on me?

Just got back. Where's the truck at?

Cholla Bay, (Rocky Point) (up the street from JJ's Cantina), in my girlfriend's aunt & uncle's garage.

If you can, flat tow it to Lukeville and then borrow a trailer. Crossing the border w/ another owners property might cause issues.

I can check with the guy I gave all my 1.99:1 internals to. He might have the inner pieces if you can save the aluminum case.

Wasn't the T-case it was my third member

Well it wasn't the T-case that failed it was my inner pinion bering in my third member that seized. It was a combination of things that had led me to believe that it was the t-case at first, but through good suggestions from Rhino and BMAN things began to point towards my front axel as the problem.

So my third is with ZUK @ Gear Installs right now getting a new ring and pinion as they were damaged as well. I'm also having an Aussie locker installed at this time. I still need to get the seal replaced between the t-case and transmission before I drop the third back in, so i figure time permitting to have it all done and trail ready shortly after the first of the year.

Here are some pics of the failed bering and grooved gears.

Howdy! From the lack of discoloration, I would guess that it was parts failure/old age/ loose tolerances that killed it, as opposed to bad or no lubrication. There are trade-offs for using an auto locker in the front axle. I've been running one over 5 years, and I still notice it on the trails. When you do the transfer case seal, notch out the shift linkage so you can run in 2wd low range. It creates a lot less wear and tear on both rig and driver when you need to go slow, but you don't need maximum traction. John

May be Aussie Locker is just better :)

"Aussie Locker®’s" smooth and sensitive operation allows differential action resulting in uncompromised steering, uphill or down, soft or hard surfaces.

Hey John and Kevin,

Actually it was the lack of fluid that killed it. Much as I'd hate to say I must shoulder part of the blame for not checking it as well. My guess is that by the shape of the gears he had done a rebuild on it, put it back together and never filled it because of a stuck fill plug; hence, me not draining it because of same stuck fill plug. I know he was in the dif at some point because of the form-a-gasket that was used. I hadn't put much time in it in 4 wheel drive because of the seal between the transfer case and AT that bleeds ATF into the transfer case. So as far as it being noisy before it went, I can't even say that. It was quiet until the last 40 yds it went. It finished with a sharp squeal and a couple of thunks and then ground to a hault.

This is a FJ62 with a vacuum shift 4WD unless it's been changed. There is a switch that puts it in 4WD when switched to low range. All you would have to do is unput the switch and use the one on the dash when you want it in 4WD:beer:

Is it done yet?:D

Unfortunately it is not. Aussie Lockers sent the wrong locker to ZUK at Gear Installs. Got a message from Bill Cole, President of Aussie Lockers, that they have shipped the new part and it should be in ZUK's hands by now. ZUK was down south in the Old Pueblo this past week for the holiday, so I think it will be ready sometime this week. Soon, very soon!:D

Yes he is, camped near the step, he came over to lend a hand in getting Chris's rig going.

Very cool. I guess if you're gonna have a problem like Chris had, then having someone like ZUK lend a hand would be a good thing. So how bad was it? I didn't see any details in the other thread.

EDIT: Never mind I see that it has been posted now.

Cantinero's link is right near the top of my webpage Toyota Gear Installs
Wish I could have been of more help to Chris broken on the step but it looked like the guys had him out of there in a quick 1 hour. Keep the sunnyside up!

Hey ZUK! Nice of you to drop by. Cool link to the rebuild, now I just need the time off work to pick up my third and get it installed. RHINO can attest to how busy we have been, seeing as how I hired him to do freelance work for us as well. I hope things slow down after I get the Bud Bowl party/stage built for their Super Bowl party at Axis & Radius in Scottsdale.

ZUKE, cool link. I plan on installing an Ausie in the rear of my 40, you made it look easy.

And Daryl, looks like you picked the right guy to do the job
