I have had a fuel leak for about a month (minor) that manifested as a small spot on my driveway directly below the drivers seat. So I took it to my local mechanic and they have suggested that I need a new fuel tank and sending unit because of rust. (the rust is significant) I am a tad skeptical as he said he could not visually locate the leak. He also claimed that there were n

He also claimed that there were no fuel tanks available either new or junkyard.

Did mechanic remove the plastic shield below the tank?

Not sure if a new tank is available or not...pm CDan or Beno here.

You may be able to repair the tank with a talented TIG guy who's willing to weld a fuel tank...but you won't know a thing until you can actually see the tank itself.

Thanks Hankinid and Trunk Monkey. I was thinking that the leak was forward of the tank myself, but he said it extended to that point. I figured he wasn't lying. Probably time for a second opinion. Problem is that a little gas on the driveway (and it is just a little) smell a lot and makes the princess think a conflagration is imminent.

I've seen tanks for as little as $175.00. I can't remember where, and unfortunately I haven't the time presently to search for you but they are out there and affordable. If you want to go a wee bit further, there's an Aussie company that does extended range fuel tanks for the 100's. Do a search on here and I'm sure you'll find it.

Good luck!

OK. So I have found some tanks. I also looked at the diagram for the fuel system and it seems to include a large number of connections that would seem to be a more likely source of the leak. Since most of these connections are on top of the tank (hence invisible at this time) I am wondering if the tank itself is likely to have a leak or it is a leak in one of the many lines leading to and fro. The question that comes to mind is :

Has anyone had a 100 series tank leak as a result of age (as opposed to a puncture of some kind) Mine is a 2000, so its close to the start of this model, but there would be others right?

Yank the back seat. Access the fuel pump cover. Remove the cover, take a look.
