I am planning on selling my ’87 fj60 soon. :frown: Lots of reasons, the big two are it needs a rebuild and with a kid in the planning I need a vehicle I don’t have to tinker with all the time.

Anyway, I need some advice on how to price my truck. I know, Pandora’s box. My main concern is that it has a definite piston slap and will probably need a rebuild in the next couple of years. But it runs great right now and is in pretty good condition otherwise. I intend to disclose all the trucks issues to whoever comes to take a look. But how do I price it? If not for the piston slap I could probably get around $5000 for her (in my area).

So what’s the conventional wisdom on pricing a good condition fj60 with something like piston slap?

thanks
dave

Dave:

I sent you a pm.

Bottom line, with rigs like ours its all about condition, milage,
interior/exterior shape and milage.

I recently bought a rust-free, absolutely mint FJ60 with 142K
miles on it (my daily driver). I paid $6k for it.

i bought mine rust free, (supposedly 75k) found out later it was 175k, good interior, for 2800...little did the PO know that it was still a good deal even though they changed back the odo

post a pic of your rig, need visual stimulation in order for the brain to work, lol. i think it is fair to start at 5k but you also need to inform the buyer what you have done to it and any upgrades if any to consider it in the price and not to focus on the negative.i paid 2300 bucks for mine and all it needed was an alternator, the owner thought the engine was ready to explode.my main concern was a rust free body and complete under the hood (i,e emissions) its a bit faded on top.:bounce2::bounce: john

Most always engines with piston slap have to be bored.... so your looking at a total major rebuild or a rebuilt long block.... so you looking 3 to 4K... that being said, makes the truck worth(no rust) 1500 bux... unless you can find a sucker and most of them hang on eBay.......

Here's the photo album I put together for the sale:

I intend to be as honest as possible with all potential buyers. I have always come away from my vehicle purchases finding things that I know the PO knew about but didn't mention. Bad karma. I've been running this truck with the piston slap noise for 4 years now, but thats hard to prove to a buyer. And it doesn't really mean much anyway.

Looks pretty clean, How many miles are on it? Does it pass Cali SMOG?

157,000 mi on the odometer and it passed smog in 2007. It's pretty clean, but the paint on the hood and roof are sun shot. No metal showing though. It's really a great truck, not much to fix on the body or interior (maybe replace the passenger window crank, it's a little hard to move), and get a new cargo carpet/liner. I think I'm going to post her next Tuesday on my local Craigs List.

Thats a sick paint job, your interior is a lot better than mine, but body looks a little bubbly and rusted, what do you have on the front of your 60 and what kind of floor mats are those, they look pretty good.

The rust is pretty minor, it’s about exactly what you see. The frame has no big rust on it, just surface rust. The paint probably looks better in the pics than it does in person. The thing on the front of the truck is my High Lift on a custom holder.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys. I’ll probably post the ad tomorrow for $4200 obo and go from there. It’s got some issues, but is a pretty good truck and the right LC guy with the time and tools should be able to make a good deal out of it.
