Have a trip planned with my buddies this weekend to the Texas Hill Country. I just got my 05 100 about a month ago (still stock, but no running boards) and I can't decide wether to take it, or my old 97 80, which is now the hunting vehicle. My friend, whose ranch we are going to, says the roads are bad; essentially trails where the trees have been removed, but no improvement made to the ground=rocky. The main issue would be bottoming out on downhill grades. He wheels in his Defender90 and says that its geared low enough to where he doesn't have to brake going downhill, but won't take his H3 becuase he says it doesn't have the ground clearance (although that's no bearing on the LC).

What's the worst that could happen to my baby?

worst? total it! without insurance...

Go for it. How long you gonna baby that thing for... :flipoff2: :D

I would say don't think twice and take the 100. You will not regret and you will get to know the 100 better and how capable it is. Once the 100 is in "L" gear and tranny in low with diff lock, it will go any down hill with out brakes. I did once in "Circle H" ranch in Leaky TX going down problaly 70-80 degree down hill on a grvel road and it was piece of cake. I was very impressive..
By the way where exaclty are u planning to go and when??
May be I will my 100 too :o))

If the 100 isn't protected with sliders, have good A/T's, or MT's.. I would vote for 80 (assuming the ol girl has them already).

No sliders yet, wanting to build my own. Does have Nitto ATs though.

TXLX470 - We will be between Leakey and Refugio on Hwy 83. I can't wait and am glad the weather is gonna be nice.

Gotta take the hundy FATbunny - come one - take some pic of it next to the Def90 going down those grades....

If his stock H3 doesn't cut it, your stock 100 will not either. Let's be honest with ourselves folks.

Well, I honestly don't think he has tried it becuase he has the def90. When parked next to the H3, the 100 looks to have quite a bit more clearance, especially with the nerf bars on the H3.

I would trust the 4wheeling capability of the LC long before that of the H3. If it were a real Hummer on the other hand.......

HWY 83 is nice and winding roads...From what I have seen it's pretty much plain land with hills. you may scrach your rear bumper if you don't have hitch...

I wish I could join you guys....we will there in May-June

I lead the AZ HummerX Club here in AZ often. Just lead them on a 12-hour run 2 weeks ago.

They have 33's on them, almost no bumper overhangs (BIG plus), the same ground clearance as a 100, and are smaller. I am the "100-series mascot mega-wheeler" though I know when a stock 100 is licked. Stock H3 all the way.

I will definitely take you on your word, you have experience on your side. Thanks for the advice.

You're welcome. Enjoy!

Plus...it's better to take the vehicle that you will have the most FUN in. "Worry" reduces the "fun factor".

That's pretty much the convincing I was looking for. Decision made!

as the day goes by you begin to worry less as the fun factor increases. At least that was my case.

And....the flip side is true too. You take the older rig you enjoy less. Then, on the trail you see that the new rig would do just fine and you miss it for the rest of the trip.
