I just finished pretty much where and what you are doing. I had the same problem. I did not get a new expansion valve. What we both should of done, is get an expansion valve, also! Then you can flush the entire system to get all the old oil out of the system. Then, all the oil that came in the new compressor should be what is needed in a fresh, clean system.

So what i did (and i'm actually putting a vacuum to it tomorrow and charging the system so we will see) was to flush the front half of the system out exiting the dryer. Since i had a new one of those. So that means that the upper half of the system, over to the expansion valve, still has to have some oil in it. But my feeling is that it is minimal. So i decided to risk it and install the new compressor and the dryer with all the oil that came in the new compressor.

Results are in.

I drained 120cc (120ml) from my brand new out of box Denso 471-1166 compressor. I had it fully inverted, held in a vise upside down and let it drip for a half hour. I rotated the compressor shaft in several different orientations too

So, how much oil should I add?

It's pretty tough to get all the oil out of a compressor. Some have a drain plug to make it easier, but I wouldn't get too excited about not getting all the oil out. I'd flush the condenser, re-instill the 120cc back into the compressor and put it together. Once it's buttoned up, turn the clutch hub a dozen times to distribute the oil, then vacuum and charge.

But my feeling is that it is minimal. So i decided to risk it and install the new compressor and the dryer with all the oil that came in the new compressor.

Agree with that decision.^^^

Regarding the direction from the FSM, I'm unable to find any discussion in my online FSM regarding the A/C system. I've tried going through the folders manually as well as keyword searches. I'm wondering if my online version is incomplete. Below is a screenshot of the folders:

Below is a back and forth I had with tech support at DENSO regarding the amount of oil that is shipped with the 471-1166. The answer I got is the same as what 1972FJ55 said with respect to the amount of oil present in new compressors and not being able to completely drain them. The email string is in reverse chronological order. Hope this helps to clear things up. My system is all buttoned up and ready to be evacuated and recharged. I'll post back and let you all know how it goes. Good luck to the rest of you!

David,

Yes, the compressor does in fact come with 224cc's of oil in it, this was confirmed with the engineering spec sheet we have been provided for the compressors. Therefore, if you are doing a full replacement of the system you have enough oil in the compressor for a full system charge. Additionally, it is normal to not be able to completely remove all of the oil out of the compressor. So, if you were only able to remove 100cc's out of it, that is fine.

Please let me know if there is anything else.

Thank you,

Veronica

Hi Veronica,

I'm doing a complete replacement of the system. I'm replacing the compressor, condenser, drier and evaporator core. I want to know how much oil I need to add system. My system needs about 224cc. Therefore, I need to confirm that the new compressor in fact shipped with 224cc. As I have said I was only able to drain ~100cc from it and I want to know if this is typical. Obviously, I don't want to add too much oil to the system so I am looking for a good way to completely drain the oil from the new compressor to verify how much it has.

Dave,

Are you trying to equalize the amount in the system?

Hi Veronica,

I was referring to the new compressor.

Dave,

Are you referring to the oil coming out of the old compressor or the new one?

Hi Veronica,

Thank you for your timely reply. I have tried to drain the oil out of my compressor, per the installation instructions, and each time was only able to get about 100cc. Is this typical? I'm trying to figure out where the other 124cc is. Is there a volume of oil that typically remains in the compressor when draining it?

Thanks,
Dave

Hello David,

Thank you for contacting DENSO. The a/c compressor 471-1166 has 224 cc's of oil in it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you,

Veronica
