I'm looking to install a OEM Navigation unit into my 2000 TLC. Is this something that can be easily done? Is the factory nav unit readily available? If so, how expensive?

Obviously, I could simply install a new aftermarket unit with nav, but if the Toyota one is an option, I'd like to know. Anyone?

Also, forgive me if this is a FAQ. I did a search in this forum but didn't seem to come up with an awful lot.

Thanks from a noobie....

I think toyota is essentially aftermarket

I installed an Eclipse AVN 5495 in my truck. Works perfect - does wha it is supposed to. Stuck the rear camera in there which is kinda useless, but I figured WTF. I thought I read that Toyota is using this same model as their stock Nav in newer trucks. So I am not there is any advantage to a standard toyota model other than extra unit cost, more expensive new maps, 3x the cost for the camera, etc.

FYI, if anyone is wondering - I have now had this unit for 3 months and it has been rock solid. The only oddity is that you cannot turn it truly off, so you can never get the antenna all the way down if the car is on. Have not been to a automatic car wash since I got it, basically. I need to stick a switch in sometime.

Awesome post man. Thanks. I was just looking at that model today on Crutchfield. Cool...

I looked extensively at putting an OE nav unit into my '00 LC so that I could have HVAC integration... final evaluation: not doable. I was given a "buddy" quote of $3000 labor to strip the nav from an '03 model, relocate it to my '00, and get the '03 up and running on my old head unit.

Best bet is the the oemvalue camry/sienna units or an Eclipse unit. The camry units can also have the voice command system components added easily.

Man, Bull...thanks for the link to that thread!!!! Sweet. Looks like the Eclipse unit might be the way for me to go.

A Tom Tom gives more flexibility and costs less. Plus you won't have to mess with a CD changer taking up space in the center console.

It's cool to have the OEM in-dash Navi but these portables are very nice as you can take them from car to car... or no car at all since many have built in batteries. Here's my next Garmin Navi. Besides being widescreen, touchscreen and bluetooth for hands free calls, it can get localized information such as traffic, weather, GAS prices, movie times, restaurant reviews and more.

I have a Garmin street pilot that I used extensively in the D-90. And I absolutely LOVE it. I think if it's a nav unit you're after, you can't go wrong with Garmin.

I need to replace my stock radio/in dash CD player anyway, so I'm looking at an integrated unit. Stereo, CD, Nav, Bluetooth, etc. The Pioneer unit linked above or the Eclipse units are looking good to me at this point. But our needs are different. Go with the Garmin, I'm sure you'll love it.

Eclipse

I have not done much with my LC other than put in the 5495 that Seller is talking about. I second his opinion that it's a great upgrade if the cost doesn't get to high. My wife watches movies when we are on the way to track stuff and my eye's are on the trailer.

If you see a Z1 for less than $800 - snag it up - those are $2400 and are very hot items - out of stock currently at Crutchfield.
I am considering the Kenwood DDX - it is around $1000 on the web, but $1500 at Crutchfield and stores. The Z1 is the most raved about, but the Kenwood does not have an option left out - DVD, NAV, ipod, camera, bluetooth and the part that sounds the best is the SD card slot to upgrade the NAV - off the computer and not expensive CD's.
Drawback: Can not take it out like the Garmins.

For those with the Eclipse's - are these hooked up as easy as a CD player -the one harness with 2 sets of pre-outs for the factory amp???

i REALLY like the idea of a backup camera too. I pull our boat alot and never even considered how much a camera would make my life easier for hooking up the trailer until someone mentioned it in this forum.

Thanks for the info everyone... I'm looking into one of these as well and some good options listed... I also plan on replacing my stock speakers as they don't sound that great anymore... My factory antenna also seems to have issues picking up some local channels i've never had problems with in the past...

They may not sit in the dash, but my opinion is go with an after market. By far Garmin is the best for recreational units. They allow the flexibility of moving from 1 car to another & are much cheaper than an in dash. Also, because Garmin is so big & has so many followers there are alot of aftermarket & hack supporters for them.

One thing about the garmin most Street Pilot Series is you can load Garmin's topo maps which allows you to go off road, vs the on road units which will not allow tracking your path off road.

Be sure to get an external antenna, only $30, allows better placement of unit in car.

I ended up buying a Garmin 2610, an older discontinued model because the capability of the unit allows much more than some of the newer "push & go" units.

Got it for <$500 from Getfeetwet.com.

Here's a great link to do some research:

p.s. I am a Proff Land Surveyor & have been using GPS since mid- late 80's, my units at work are cm level accuracy, but run $50-$60,000.

Keep us posted.

I've been running a Garmin GPS V for a few years now and have NEVER needed the external antenna. I used mine extensively both on road and off, in the Defender, the TLC and my wife's little MB C230 and it always worked perfectly as is, out of the box. Try that first before you buy the external antenna.

External Antenna

Just my opinion, for the $30 it's still worth it, signal to noise ration & # of satelites is key to good position.

It also allows you to move the unit to wherever you want for better visibility.

I have done some accuracy test & time to position fix & hands down the external improves both in the majority of the cases.
