Here are some notes of my update of the Navigation Software in my 2002 LX470.
My 2002 Lexus LX 470 came with the Gen 2 v7.1 DVD - West DVD.
I purchased my LX in Santa Barbara, Cal. and imported her to North Carolina.

So, I needed the East DVD. I learned that my 2002 Nav is Gen 2 and the latest
version DVD that works with it is U08 v13.1.

I purchased just the East DVD v13.1 Navigation software because it was more
affordable. But it would not update and complained about an unreadable DVD.
This was 7 months ago, and I returned that DVD as I was thinking that the
v13.1 was not compatible with my Nav.

A few days ago I got to thinking that maybe, just maybe I needed the West DVD
to update the Navigation software. So, I went on Ebay and found that I could
now purchase both East and West DVDs for only $12.88. So, I thought I would
give it a go.

I first put in the East DVD and the LX screen displayed some Japanese words and
in English that it was an unreadable DVD. So, I inserted the West v13.1 and
a colorful screen stating that it was updating. Wahola!! it worked. Next I inserted
the East DVD but then some Japanese words appeared on the screen and in
English that it was an unreadable DVD. So, I just turned ignition to off and then
back on and after a few seconds the East v13.1 DVD was recognizable and
I had the Navigation updated.

So, the moral to this story is that when you update your Nav software, you have to use
the same DVD (WEST or EAST) that you are currently using to update the software.

I just got some nav updates off eBay for my 2002 LX, and I put in the west DVD and it updated. however, after it rebooted it stops when I hit the "I agree" button to get into the map and it says there is a disk error. Did you happen to run into anything like that when you did your update?

Ditto. Same problem with my 2002 LX.
Last year I acquired a U08 13.1 Navigation DVD and it would not read.
Purchased another U08 DVD and the Nav updated and worked ... that is intermittently
on startup I often got "Disc error". It got to be so much trouble that I reverted back
to my old U02 version 07.1 DVD.

Tried also copying the newer DVD thinking that a copy might work better.
Required double density DVDs but the DVD burner on my Linux based PC can't copy it. Maybe a good copy can be made with Windows?

I think I'm right at the beginning of the same issue with my 2001. The seller on eBay is sending me new copies of the disc in case it was a burn issue. We'll see if that solves it. Has anyone updated to U08 and has had consistent success using it?

As a follow up to this I ended up buying a 2003 version of the navigation DVD. This worked.

So to summarize, I have a 2001 Land Cruiser which is a first generation nav dvd player. I got a burnt 2013 U08 version on eBay. This updated my system as I was using DATA 2000 ver.1 before. The burnt DATA ver 13.1 was too much for my system to handle and would get "Disk cannot be read" or no disk errors. I bought "Toyota DVD Navigation Map 86271-33032" which is from 2003 and it got my system to work again.

If you have a Gen1 system I wouldn't try to update. Lots of hassle for very little reward.

Also just FYI because I didn't see it on here. 03+ the update disks go into the drive underneath the passenger seat not in the center console DVD changer. I didn't even notice the drive before since it's under a plastic over. Two plastic screws and the cover comes off. My truck had the older 2009 disk from Toyota for all of North vs the ebay update that is two disks and I think 2013. This may be because the update is so large it is too hard to fit on one disk still. Anyway, I only really need West since I live on the West Coast however I couldn't get it to load. Ejected it and put East in and it worked then switched it out to West and it seems to now work fine. Verified that version 13.1 is now running on my system via touch screen menu by selecting "DVD".

At my Lexus dealer, this disc is $169 plus free install for the 2015 maps (I’m in an 01 Lx470). Since everyone seems to be having trouble, I’m considering going this route. But has anyone updated? I just want new maps so my nav can remain relevant. You guys are updating software? What does that even do?

Not everyone has trouble, except those who maybe purchase pirated disc from some vendors that could have corrupted firmware or some other reproduction/readability defect. Up until my Gen 2/3 Drive died about 18 months ago I had no trouble whatsoever updating with OEM discs and their east/west configurations. On the demise of the old 2/3 drive I fitted a Gen 4 Drive from a wrecked 2007 LC, it still had the original U21 OE disc in it. I’ve just recently loaded in a $9.95 eBay disc [obviously not OEM] latest and last data version U30 V15.1 and it works just as expected. I find the larger nav screen a handy augmentation to my daily use Waze on iPhone.
I junked my old drive with disc stuck in it otherwise you could have had the latest Gen 2/3 disc for free.

So... I don’t really know what any of that Gen 2/3, V15, U21 stuff means. All I know is I’ve got an 01 LX470 with what I’m guessing is the original maps. Break it down for me.

Gen refers to generation of hardware, the dvd drive under the passenger seat. Old vehicles have Gen 2/3 and the newest have Gen 9. The last generation of dvd based systems was Gen 5. 100/470s are either Gen 2/3 or Gen 4. It’s not unheard of to replace failed Gen 2/3 drives with a newer Gen 4 because they are the same price on eBay, you retain 99% functionality and you can get a slightly more recent update disc. Each year, until recently for the older systems, an update came out in October comprised sequentially of data Version X.x and labeled U ?. Eg. the Gen 4 2006 disc is labeled data version 06.1 and U21 and the latest is data version 15.x U30.

Ok, so if I’m follow everything correctly.... as is, I have a gen 2/3, and the most recent update I can get is from.... 2013? According to that chart? But gen 4 can get a 2015 update?

The dealer told me that they can update my truck to the 2015 maps. Is that not correct then?

That’s a Lexus chart from Lexus official site so.......it would not be the first time a dealer wasn’t perfectly accurate regarding detail. Just ask the dealer what part number they propose to install.

Yes! Might as well have the most up to date maps you can, right? $10 - $15 is a drop in the bucket considering how much other money we dump into our LCs. :-)

For those that have done this, is it worth the update?

Tell me about it. So what is a reliable link to a Nav DVD for my Gen 2/3 for sale for $10-15? I don’t want to fall down the pirated dvd that doesn’t work rabbit hole. Hoping that one of you that had luck purchasing from a reliable source online can point me in the correct direction.

Mine is a copy, but it works fine, so far. It came with two disks, East and West.

This the one I purchased:

I was in the same boat on Monday. However I believe I did wrong with less patience. Now both my discs show “program disc inserted” messages on the screen. Any idea what that means specifically?

I’m betting it will work if I can reset the unit. Best idea I’ve heard is to unplug the stereo fuse. Will be trying tomorrow.

Have any ideas yourself for the system?

Thanks for sharing. Old navs are a pain but $15 is worth a try to get them relevant again.

I really would like to update mine a little to at least show my home... it was built in 1999...O+>
