Hi! Just want to know if any knows what is needed in order to put in an OEM navigation system in a 98 Landcruiser that didn't originally have one. Do you need anything else other than just the system and LCD?

I have no idea what would be involved, however, I would be very surprised is this turned out to be less than a complete nightmare....

How about a $300.00 Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS? With mounting system, 12 volt cable, street maps and topo maps, $450.00 tops. Portable, waterproof, etc. I haven't figured out what the difference is between a hard mounted Nav system and a protable GPS, other than screen size. You can even hook the handhelds up to a laptop if needed.

I'm not trying to flame or be flamed, I just see more practicality in portability- I do like to get out on foot in the woods, over the river, through the dale, etc, though.

I would think you would be better off selling the 98 and getting a 2001+ than trying to upgrade.

+1 for going the aftermarket route.

+2 for going the aftermarket route...

I'm pretty sure the factory nav antenna is up in the rear view mirror. I'd imagine the cost of the antenna alone would be pretty steep.

I would prefer to have my Garmin 276c on the dash over the stock 2004 nav system in the dash. The Garmin offers more features and better trip routing/control.

The Toyota GPS has the antenna in the middle of the dashboard, at the top of the LCD monitor itself. Now that I brought my UZJ-100 home to the Philippines from NorCal, it's useless except when I switch it to emergency mode to know my coordinates at any given time.

So I bought a GPS 276C there from www.gpsnow.com. They've got the best prices on the 'Net, and it's where my bro-in-law got his too. The 276c with the optional automotive kit is the fastest GPS Garmin has I believe. Fast in term of re-routing when you veer off when navigating the city streets. Best feature I like about the 276c is that it's waterproof as it's originally a marine GPS. I used to have a Garmin GPS V which is a great GPS --only has smaller screen and is in black-and-white only.

I believe Christo looked into retrofitting the Nav system from a newer vehicle into an earlier one that didn't have the nav available as an OEM option, and said it would have been a nightmare. Evidently, there are some big changes behind the dash for the different years.

If you look at the two different vehicles, practically everything in the center dash is different. I have the factory nav system, and it has controls for the stereo, the climate control system, and the nav system. My guess is, you would have to change out all of that stuff to make it work. My guess is it would be extremely difficult to do.

I've been considering an in-dash Nav system for my 99 LX, and the one that looks to be the coolest to me (i.e., the one with the most non-essentials) is the Pioneer http://www.avic-n1.com/ In addition to the navigation and stereo functions, this unit allows you to have all sorts of non-essentials, like a rear view camera kit (ala some of the newer Lexus SUV's), a performance computer (speed, lateral g's, etc.) and other stuff.

I looked at one at a local car audio shop, and it's a pretty neat device. The screen stows away if desired, and it's overall a clean design. The price was a bit steep at $1,800 installed; however, online, you can find the unit for +/- $1,300........no question that the more cost-effective route are the mobile, waterproof units......quite frankly, that's probably what I'll end up doing (along with an upgrade to the factory Nakamichi head unit)

Hey mad max i have 99 lc and was in your shoes about a year ago i went with the Eclipse AVN2454 in Dash navigation/cd/dvd system. I can not say enough about it it is the best!!!!! It has endless capabilities monitors, aux(rca for any thing you want to plug into it), cd changers and so on check out these reveiws http://carsound.com/articles/publish/printer_282.shtml I highly recomend this system it is made to fit in your ride!!

Personally I'm glad my 100 doesn't have nav. It just seems a little too "tech" to have to cycle through screens to change my radio and ac settings.

radio and a/c have dedicated "hard" buttons on the dash.

actually, instead of the avic-n1, maybe the avic n2 is better cuz it routes based on traffic as well...
