i currently have an ARB 50qt fridge on ARB Drawers as pictured below. When you pull the fridge out and open it. The tailgate area constrains how much you can open it. Not a big deal really

I am considering though going to a dual zone National Luna dual Zone 60L that opens sideways (I know you can mod it). It is an inch taller than my ARB and wanted to know if anyone had a similar setup with a National Luna who could comment on access when the lid is opened

Do you mean the lid won't open much due to hitting the hatch? I have the same problem. Have you considered the 63qt or 37qt ARB? It's an inch or two shorter.

The lid isnt a driver for looking for a new fridge. I want a dual zone, but want to make sure it wont be worse with a 1" taller National Luna

I could live with it as is and have for 5 years

A little bit of a diversion from your basic question....but just some thoughts on the NL60 Twin.
-Also a little different approach to fridge placement.

I keep my National Luna 60L Twin in row 2....so I don’t have the same lid height Q as you...but... The NK 60 Twin is absolutely awesome. Having separate thermostat controls for each side is extremely effective.

It’s what allows me to offer ice cream on the trail...and chocolate milk at the same time. :) Complete control over freeze or cool...even in the heat of Moab summer.

By the way... you can swap in hinges that release the lid in the NL too. I don’t need them bc of my setup, but they are zavailable.

Beyond the fridge and lid height Q though... If you don’t need your full second row, the 60 Twin fits nicely on passenger, keeping the 60% side of row 2...OR...fits even more nicely if you put it behind driver, keeping just the 40% side of row 2. I had the 40% seat in at Ouray this Summer at KCDC, which was perfect when we needed to transport an injured motorcyclist off the mountain. Having that part of the 2nd row saved the day.

Another huge benefit of running the fridge on the floor of row 2 is that fridge access is way easier, quicker, and even accessible while rolling by your front row or 2nd row passenger. Super handy spot, and also makes more efficient use space in the rear cargo bay.

Behind driver with 40% seat setup:

And here is is on passenger, keeping the 60% side of row 2:

Both arrangements allow sleeping in the back when traveling alone.

Love the National Luna.

Thanks Mark. I do need my 2nd row for family or the dogs depending on where I am going..

I had my fridge in the 40 side of the rear seat for a time. I agree it was great. Problem was I had to put both kids on the 60 side, which doesn't work for longer trips, trust me :slap:

For one trip, I removed the front passenger seat and made a platform that went there. I could hold the ARB 50 and two 5gal water cans. I actually liked that arrangement the best but obviously doesn't work if you have an adult passenger :princess:.

I figured out my Gobi ladder is not letting my rear hatch open all the way. I have to take it off to make the Slee rear bumper work so I likely am good

I’ve considered yanking the front passenger seat for long solo trips as well. Would leave the back huge for sleeping and gear...and make fridge access while driving really nice.

Ordered the National Luna 60L Dual Legacy fridge. Just wanted to complete the story

By the way, Paul May is awesome to work with. We have such a great group of vendors. Not only do they provide great products and services, they are friends who enjoy the sport and are just great to hang out with. Paul's bar at events is always fun

here is the final final answer

The taller 60L National Luna works on top of the ARB drawers, with some modifications

First it needs to be installed as forward on the sliding drawer as it can

second, I put a peice of wood behind it so it couldnt slide backwards. It wants to be in the middle of the tie downs. You could mount the rear tie down parts forward, but mine were already there

And finally, the lid does not open enough to take the baskets out to get at what is on the bottom or being able to use the fridge part for standard togo boxes (my wifes favorite use)

So I took 3 baskets out

I left the bottom ones in as you can grab them and lift them up to make it easier to get the stuff on the bottom

The lid opens enough for access to both compartments

Can't say enough good things about Paul May and Equipt1. They are always a pleasure to deal with

Thanks for the very kind words. We try. I am really glad it will work out for you Ken. If it starts to be a pain, those red hinge replacements are an easy fix. Let me know if there is anything else we can help with.

Cheers,

Thanks Paul. Those hing replacements make it a front to back opening? That could make it able to get a basket in and out of the front, but would make the rear likely harder to get in and out of if I understand it correctly

Ahhh red hinge mod allows you to simply remove the lid

Hmmm

All you DINKs crack me up with your ‘remove the row’ comments. :-)

There is another option ... you can replace the ARB roller drawer with a 1/2 height one.
