All the threads i have read people have done the GR mod. Since it requires some rewiring i decided to go with a direct replacement for my 74. however after getting the starter off the new one has some fitment issues. It wont seat with the flywheel. Then i put them side by side and the gears are in totally different locations. Do i need to shim the new one to bring it out? Anyone else have this problem? See attached and thanks in advance!

The gear on the lower one is extended because the solenoid is disassembled which has a spring to retract it like the one in the top picture.

Makes sense... Didn't think about that. Regardless though when I measure how far in the flywheel sits the starter gear isn't extended enough. Is it supposed to only engage when the key is turned hence the spring? Sorry for the newbie questions.

Yes, it only extends during enging cranking and retracts when you let up on the key.

Take your OEM to a local auto electric shop and have it remanufactured properly. I bought a NAPA rebuilt and wound up taking it and my OEM starter to Art's Auto electric in Ontario, California and came home with two starters that I can trust. The auto parts (name your store) rebuilders put used components back into the appliance. Art demonstrated that to me with the starters and also, the Napa "rebuilt" CS130 alternator.

Art charged about $120.00 for all three and gave me the trash, used components for my own scrape pile. Art installed a brand new armature in the OEM starter and replaced the gizmo in the CS130 that allows for a one wire operation.

Your Toyota dealer sell Remanufactured starters which is why they cost a lot more. You get what you pay for.

maybe i should just order one from Toyota (or take my OEM to be redone) and put this on the truck in the meantime. Its my daily so i need a short term solution. Now i just need to figure out how to line the bottom hole up so bolt it back on... it was being stubborn earlier and its a tight space even with a stubby wrench.
