Ok, i have had this whine for some time and i can't figure out what it is. At first i though it was the tranny fluid getting gummed up in my filter so i dropped my pan cleaned the filter and put it all back together with Sythetic fluid and it is still there. The whine happens when i push on the accelterator or if i am going 60 mph and it will happen then as well. My tranny does not slip, there is no jerking of the tranny, she actuall shifts very smooth but this whine is driving me nuts. It doesn't whine for a long time maybe 20-30 seconds and then its gone. Sometimes when i am coasting i get this whine sound. What can it be and where should i be looking to fix it?

Are you 100% sure it is comming from the transmission? Could it be a bearing going bad? like a pinion bearing perhaps?

.02 cents (I probably should give you change)

I don't think its tranny related at all...some one mentioned it could be a belt maybe. Thoughts?

Try going at the speed where the whine comes in and shift to nuetral and coast to a stop. This will isolate the transmission from the engine and axles. See if the whine is related to axle speed or engine speed.

Will that damange anything if i do that? I let off the accelerator when i hear this noise and it continues and that is why i don't think its tranny related.

I can't see a reason why it would damage anything(correct me if I am wrong). I've done it before with car rentals :) , accidentally bumping the shifter to nuetral at 60 mph and reengaging it again in Drive. I 've done this at 30-40 mph with my 88 fj62 and didn't have a problem( not in 4 wheel) . It's probably best to coast to a stop to make sure, you don't accidently put it in reverse ( make sure that nobody else is in the street). It would be nice if you can isolate the engine noise from the axles noise by shutting off the engine while rolling to a stop, but you will NOT have Power BRAKES.
When you plateau at a constant speed does the whine occur/start ? Does the whine occur/start only when you are accelerating? Has the whine ever started after you were decelerating?Have you checked the transfer case for oil?

I get the same intermittant whine. Usually at about 55-60 mph. At first I thought it might be related to the ac compressor (it still may be). But is does with the ac on or off. I also recently thought my pinion bearing was going out so I had that looked and it was the pinion nut that is supposed to be locked in place. My mechanic locked it down, it took 251,000 miles for it to come loose. I guess my point is that the pinion thing was whining but it was a totally different kind of whine. Sorry not to be of help but I needed to commiserate.

btw, the best place to shift to neutral from drive is when you get off the freeway exit.

i'll second the "are you sure it's the tranny"....course i'm a manual person, so i know nothing of autos, but as soon as i read the title, i thought 'fan clutch'

It's either a belt or a bearing one of your accessories(AC PS Alt), in which case it will do it sitting still and you rev the engine up high.
Good luck.

Or it could be your differential.

I am going to lean toward your diff also.( BTDT ) a few times over.

The best way i have found to figure out what it was at home was to place the entire vehicle on Good jackstands and put it in gear and have myself or a mechanic under listening for the noise. Safety is your friend here. If you are going to do this be safe or take it to a garage with a lift.

I don't get this sound when the truck stands still...i do get it mainly on the hwy between 50-65 mph. Today when it happened i would let off the accelerator and the whine would slowly go away and if i gave it gas right before the whine went away it would come back in a high pitching sound. Like i said i don't think its the tranny cause i have had zero problems shifting, accelerating or going from gear to gear. I am at a lost on this one.

when was the last time you had it in and outta hi 4wd, low 4wd and engaged and disengaged the hubs... just try for my peace of mind going thru all of these things on some dirt lot and see if you hear the whine in any combination of the above.

put back in 2HI and disengage hubs put TC in neutral and then back in 2HI. get back on the hardtop and take it out for another spin. god may not even know what it is until you isolate it a little better. we know you get it at speed (mainly) - when else do you get it and not?

if all else fails call click and clack on saturday morning on NPR (National Public Radio)... would love to hear on the radio how they would diagnose & fix 'Alice'! maybe we ought to all start calling them.
