My used head is warped, how much milling is too much?

Well, I ended up ordering a used head a week or so ago, brought it to the machine shop, no cracks but warped. They say that spec is to mill off .020 but it needs about .026 to level out and work. Is this too much for reg. unleaded? I've read some posts of milling off .040 when I searched the site. I know you need premium for that? What about .026? How much would compression be raised?
I'm definately seeing why the $850 MAF rebuilt unit really wasn't that bad of a deal!
I need to call the machine shop back in a couple hours and let them know if its a go or not. Do the work or or question the warranty?

I milled 0.050 off mine for the rebuild. I'm at 5000 ft altitude so we have 85, 87 and 91 octane fuel available. Sometimes its runs great on 85, sometimes it knocks. Usually it'll run great on 91, but still sometimes knocks. I'm not clear on whether lower altitude would help or hurt for a given compression but I think you'd be safe to shave 0.026 of the head if its never been refaced before. My machinist stamped the edge of the head outboard of the headgasket with "050" You might examine the head to see if anyone indicated previous machine work.

Toyota specs .100 as max to be removed. .026 doesn't require a second thought. By itself it will not raise compression enough to make any noticable difference in performance or fuel requirements.

Well, now there is a crack. Its about 1 inch long near the water hole (I'm told) It doesn't go anywhere but I guess that means it doesn't go anywhere yet? Talked to maf, appartently the rebuit heads on the site are not complete and they want $900 plus for a complete head plus a $350 core. I think its kind of crap since their site claims $450 plus $300 core. hmmmmmm

The Manafre description talks about valves and testing the seal but the listed price is for a head without valves? That's lame. Try Cruiserparts.net for a complete used head. Have it rebuilt locally. You may be able to get James to warrant it against cracks.

Thats where I got the one I have now! They are cool guys though and I'm gonna mail it back to 'em. Hopefully they have another one in stock to send me!

How far would you have to go to make a difference in either? I figure a 3FE would be about the same amount of milling as a 2F head...

Aren't 86-87 2f heads the same as 3fes I thought I read that in another post (even though 62s aren't carberated?)

The 62 heads are different, but I think only in the aspect that they have bungs for injectors. I think everything else is basically the same.

Generally you have to go .050 - .070 before it matters. The 3FE has a different shapr to the chamber, but The same general rule of thumb applies to that head as well.

The later 2Fs used 3F heads. But not 3FE heads. The injected engine had a slightly different shape to the combustion chamber. And to the intake port.
