i can't believe i drove it in 2wd almost 5 miles back to the trail head and onto the trailer. it even drove off then on the trailer again.

Nothing a stick and a welder can't fix.

You must have hit that puppy pretty hard on a rock. I guess it wouldn't really need to be that hard of a hit, just a hit in the right spot.

i didn't hit it on anything. the skid plate is very good and beefy.
it bound up somehow. it was in 2wd w/ the hubs locked, i was in the puerco wash and the front just locked up suddenly. the front output bearing may have failed (it sounds like dirt in it now when turned by hand) or it may not have been getting engaged in 4wd fully. my custom shifter is a little vague where to shift it to, so it's in the exact right spot. i have felt confident it was in the right spot, but now i'm not so sure.

i'll have it apart in an hour or so from now. hopefully the problem is easy to spot.

That's some serious damage from an 'internal' source. Did you find the failure point?

It took you how long to find that damage? :)

i didn't look for it for 2 months. after 1.5 years of building that thing, i still don't feel like working on it anymore.
i saw the bottom crack before it came out, but couldn't see the top till i got it out.

Marc, i was moving about 15mph when the front locked up. that is a ton of force. if the back had locked at the same time, i don't think it would have been as bad, but it was only the front.

I could see how if a bearing seized up with that much momentum it would 'peel' the case apart.

I saw you driving (probably home) on Paseo Monday morning with Bionic in tow. My buddy Gary Smith says you take it to work and get a lot done on it. Sounds like a great job.

What are your plans now that you know what is wrong? Same style tranny or a different one?

Graham

you know Gary?! he's a great guy. we made some beer together a while back.

yep, i was going home from work. i found a junk yard replacement for $300. i'll get it wednsday open it, give it new seals and whatever else it needs and slap it back in. i gotta be ready for summer wheelin'!

I'll try to get Gary out on a run with us, sometime.

well, i can't find anything that indicates a problem in this case. there's a couple small areas that looks rough where a mini washer type bearing is, but nothing that could bind up that bad. in fact it all looks to be in great shape.

JB WELD- It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see above.

Doesn't Gary Smith run with the NM4W? Or didn't he at least used to run with the NM4W? Lives next door to Paul Thompson in a nice little Rubicon...
