I've lost my best friend today. Scout, our 16 year old Boykin
Spaniel, went M.I.A. today. She walked out to the Chestnut trees with the wife today and when the wife turned to go back...no Scout. It's just a short distance from the house.
The neighbors, the wife and I have searched the woods over. No Scout. No response to my mega decibel return call. Nothing.
She NEVER strayed from home. Never in 16 years.
She had been suffering lately as one would expect from a 16 year old dog. We just couldn't let go.
She made the call for us today. That's just the kind of wonderful girl she has always been.
My wife is guilt/grief stricken. I can't console her enough.
Today had been a good day for ol Scout. She "helped" me wash
HER truck, Gundy the FJ40, and we went for a ride. She was smiling the whole time. I thought there was a spring in her step I hadn't seen in quite a while when we returned home.
She loved the woods at Point-o-View, our home. I guess she wanted to remain a part of it forever on her terms.
God Bless her. I love her so. Best damn dog I know.
All the property lights are on for the duration of the night.
It's going to be a rough night here.

Sorry to hear such sad news, David. Best wishes to you and your family during a really tough time.

We've had a string of this kind of stuff here lately and I can empathize with your position.

I believe I've seen you quote the rainbow bridge here a number of times in support of others in similar situations, hopefully you can now use it to ease your pain and find some peace.

it's official

Bless her heart. She sent a confirmation of her demise today.
A large tuff of her fur was lying in the front lawn when we came home from work today. Clearly not just shed fur.
No doubt about, ol Scout sent her ol tracking
buddy a sign so clear even he could read it.
It helped the wife a lot with a lot of issues.
God Bless Cherokee Scout, always thinking of others.

Sorry to hear about that Gundy.

Sorry to hear, I know its hard

16 years of love seems so short, its the cruel fact of having pets. Best wishes coming you and your wifes way.

I remember she sat on my foot all night long before OTMT last year while we enjoyed hot dogs and frosty beverages. She'll be missed.

My condolences and best wishes for you and the family.

Again, the expressions of condolences from friends really helps.
We've launched a search for a top notch breeder who has Scout's
bloodlines in their breeding stock. Seems the ol girl's bloodline
is well renown and prized. Edisto Kennel's dogs appear to be respected
worldwide. Edisto Kennel is no longer in business due to health reasons
of the owners , who had become dear friends over the years.
We often exchanged letters and pics during Scout's time with us.
We have passed the muster from a couple of breeders we are impressed with and
have arranged to visit their kennels very soon.
Hoping to have our 3rd Boykin before year's end.

Definately a bummer, very cool that you found a way to keep the spirit alive.

Best of luck.

My wife's dog was part Boykin, we think. Great dog, and it was very tough to put him down. At least you have the peace of mind knowing she went on her own terms.

Good luck in the puppy search, and all the associated puppy training.
