Tasmania is the nicest place in Australia in my opinion. If you are only here for a few weeks, spend it all in Tassy and you will not be disappointed. If you are keen to see the mainland, then I'd say explore the Victorian and NSW high country. I am not a fan of QLD as it reminds me too much of the worst of Florida.

Stay out of any city if you can - they are all pretty similar, and they are all covered in speed cameras. The best thing about Australia is the lack of people in the bush, but the cities are crowded and expensive.

H55s are not hard to come by, and if you buy 5 or 10 from the same place, you will get them for a decent price. If you only buy one at a time, you will find that they are pretty costly.

Whey, thanks for the inputs, appreciate it! Tassy it is then... some day! i guess you will be with me, as a tour guide and camp company!?! ;)
I really dont have any interests in cites, and will stay clear.

Maybe i should check for a group buy on h55s, lots of people here need an extra gear to keep up with both the old and modern world.

Say hi to Patches from me!

Hi Josh @Chamba

It's taken me a while but I've finally tracked your 60 axles under a 40 thread. How does the truck ride after all this time? Are you still running 60s axles? I'm considering swapping 60s axles under my 1969 FJ45 but adding 80s coils and arms. I figure the additional width will help fit those wide coils in. And finally, how much wider are the 60s axles? Cannot find anything definitive on google.
Cheers, Dan

I am running 60 series axles in my truck. Had a set of custom 17" x 8" wheels built with 4.75" backspacing so they will still fit in the wheel wells with skinny tires. Custom perches and outboarding the springs was necessary, with a cut and turn, as I went SOA.

Thanks TLC and Steve, but do you guys have definitive axle widths by any chance..?

Everything I have read is the 40 series axles are 55" wide and the 60 series are 58". This makes sense with my backspacing on the wheels so that they still cleared the TRE's and the fenders.

60 Series FF axle with stock 45 springs SOA, front is out-boarded

Springs out-boarded in front. On a borrowed set of shop-roller wheels, but you get the idea of the setup

Wheels with powder coating and clips...started life out as split rims on my neighbors' 45 from OZ...slightly modified for my build.

I've read that they're 3" wider too Steve but I couldn't find any hard data. Til now.

55" and 58" are my recollection as well. 80-series is much wider. I don't want to speak for Josh, but he is rarely on here of late and every time we've talked about it, he is very happy with his axle setup. When he ran just the 60 rear with 40 front he had problems with tire wear. I haven't heard for certain that it is resolved with the front axle swap, but he seemed pretty sure it was.

Thanks very much 2many. I plan on running both 60 axles front and rear but with 3.70's and hopefully the rear air-locked.80 series coils/buckets/arms/shocks and stock 45 series leaves in the rear. Unless I can source factory LandRover rear airbags then I might consider coiling the rear but until then..

Hi,
I have a 1983 FJ40 with 2F and H55F transmission. Standard differentials with front disks, locking hubs and rear drums. I have not checked yet, but I think I have 4.11 differentials. Planning to get the locking differentials in both, front and rear. Not in much favor of tires wider than the body! 60 series wire locking differentials will be very difficult to find in Pakistan. Most of the 60 series in Pakistan are either UN or foreign missions auctioned vehicles, which were mostly standard versions.

70 series electric diffs are available here. But I am not sure about the gear ratios and how it will mesh up with my motor/tranny setup. I heard that they are much better for highway driving but torque is not the same as compared to the existing setup. But I think that if it gives less torque then existing setup, on the other hand, it will also give locking options on all wheels which would compensate torque. In any case, how much less torque it could be for me to notice and 70 series itself is quite an accomplished vehicle. Another thing I have been told is that 70 diffs are 4" or 100 mm wider than the 40 diffs. Also, I will have to reposition the mounts on the axles for leaf springs to align with the mounts on the frame, which is not a big deal.

So, I am more concerned about wider diffs and gear ratios. If anyone has exact knowledge about this, I will appreciate the help. Cheers :)
