I just went through my first tank of gas in the '93 pickup. The odometer said 208 miles on 14 gallons of gas. The truck has 31" tires, so I assume the true miles are a little more. I'm still not impressed - that's about 15 mpg. My V8 4Runner gets better mileage.

Does this sound like normal mileage? Stock 22RE, automatic transmission, 4WD regular cab short bed, no AC. CEL was not on. No highway driving - just short trips to the gym and home depot.

In a 93 i would not know, i do know, however, that my 84 with 31's and the 22r 5spd gets around 23-25 on the highway, and 18 in the city. I have a .33% correction rate. My odo says 36 miles when google maps and other vehicles says 48.6 miles to the nearest big city

So, I guess 15 for city driving isn't too far off. The auto transmission probably eats a few mpg's.

The auto definitely eats a little more gas and that's only a small part of why I'll be happy when I get my manual in.

I don't think that is that far off at all-especially for short trips and for an auto.

not bad. you might see better with properly inflated tires, and a tune up.

but like they said, an auto kills MPG. my buddy gets 18 in his with a W56.

My 86 4runner has a correction rate of 1.08. If my odomete shows 10 miles I have actually driven 10.8 miles. 31's w/ 22re and 5 speed. I have no idea how you odometer could be that far off.

Yup, 31's are 10% +/- over stock 28's..... 33% is way off....

Me neither, but its what my odo says. 36.3 miles to Joplin Missouri from my house. Google maps says 48.6 and our brand new chevy says 48.3 or something. 48/36=1.33

so i multiply my odo by 1.33
I have around 194 right now. 194x1.33=258
258 off of 12 gallons = 21mpg
or
194 off of 12 gallons = 16.1mpg

I like the 21mpg better. I know for a fact that its right.
And its old, give me a break!

My chevy blazer was off the other way! it said i had 300 miles off of 30 gallon. 10mpg (sucked) Then i replaced my speedo cable to get rid of the needle shake, and i had 230 miles before i ran out of gas on 30 gallons! I averaged 7-8 mpgs, and it sucked so bad! The moral of the story is Toy>Chevy!

never rely on google maps or another vehicles odometer. Use a GPS or mileage markers.. The only way you'd be 33% off is if you were running 35's....

EDIT: the only other way that I know of would be incorrect speedo gears in the tcase output... The rest is just basic math, nothing more.

man.. I have a 84 4runner with 32's and a weber. I am only getting about 15 MPG... I feel like I am getting ripped off bigtime

It wouldnt suprise me, the jackass who rebuilt did enough wrong. How do you strip oil pan bolts? Or warp an exghaust manifold? Or decided birfeilds need gear oil instead of grease? The man knows absolutetly nothing about toys, or cars!

Ive had 4 toyota pickups 2 20r's 1 22r both stock and bored .30 over with higher performance internals and a 3.slow. None of the 4cyl ever achieve higher than 18-19mpg. Ever. All were 4x4 and 4 or 5 speeds. I have a very hard time believing a 22r can return more than 20mpg at highway speeds in a 4wd pickup. I've never experienced it, even with all syn fluids and a fresh engine.

Now, with both the 3.0 pickup and the 3.4 in my 4runner Ive consistently achieved over 20mpg. My last trip from Missoula Montana to Bozeman (195 miles) at 70mph (slow) I used 7.8 gals there and 8.0 back. Right under 25mpg.

Anyway, I think that's as good as you'll probably get with a 22r. I've never had a 22r leave me walking either though. Even when I put the hood under water without a snorkle, I winched out, let the water out of the intake and she fired right back up.

If I drive like a granny - Get 19-20mpg mostly highway

With 360K of gas logs I averaged 21mpg highway prior to major mods (lift, bumper etc)
Last 100K has seen 18/20mpg...

ALOT has to do with the right foot BTW

My stock 1985 Xtra Cab SR5 4x4 22RE (212k miles) w/5spd tranny gets 18-19mpg around town and 20-24mpg on the highway. Stock tire size. It has a steel camper shell on the back, same height as the cab. I'm looking to go bigger tires (31-33") and mild lift. I know I will sacrifice mpg to get there, tho.

I picked up some info on the "340H" once by accident. It said the "H" TC acted much like another torque converter and it was said this was the major source of the loss of both power and mpgs.

Also, if anyone cares(I do, I have an AT rig that's going to be kept AT) I believe Marlin has an adapter to put a gear driven TC and do away with the "H". I believe...no pretty sure many others have reported mileage gains by doing this and doing away with the traditional "H"ydraulic TC

...And slip it does. The big nut on my crank pulley is loose, and I can't figure-out how to tighten it without the engine turning.

just threw Aisin hubs on my T100 - mileage up almost a full 1mpg in mixed city/traffic/highway driving (leadfoot) to almost 19.5... Still doesn't touch my Civic, though.
