Howdy y'all,

I'm afraid my cruiser's rear end has developed a lot of slop. (loud clunk / truck shakes when shifting in every gear) I tightened the pinion nut and that helped for ~1k miles but it's worse than ever now. I'm obviously going to replace stuff back there, and I'm planning on an Auburn LSD while I'm at it. My question to you guys is: Given that this axle has 210k+ on it, what would you replace, and does someone have a list of all the bearings and whatnot that I should do while I'm in there?

I only want to do this once, cost isn't much of a a factor here.
What did you end up doing with the rear end?
I like that you've kept it stock, more or less, rather than going the BroDozer route.

Took the third out and had a shop replace the bearings and swap the guts for an Auburn LSD. It only took care of half the clunk, the other half is certainly the worn splines on the output shaft of the Transfer-case. I highly recommend putting an LSD in the rear if you’re in there. It does very well in 2x4 now.

I also installed an Auburn LSD in the front axle when I had to redo the knuckles. Although the truck now climbs like a mountain goat, and is absolutely phenomenal in deep snow, I wouldn’t recommend it if the vehicle is used for normal winter driving.
There’s some serious negative side effects to having the LSD in the front axle when used at highway speeds - when in 4x4 or with the hubs in. Of course it’s a non issue with the hubs disconnected.

I saw one post on Mud from a guy in the UAE who had a similar experience with the front LSD, of course he’s in a very different environment, and doesn’t need his hubs locked on the highway.

Nice work saving another 62!

Thanks! It’s been quite the journey!

very cool story! Good work.
Ill be driving my BJ60 to Alaska this summer so hope we can link up.

I found my auto-cancel turn signals started to work again the more I used the truck. My truck also sat for years only being lightly used in the summers.

Ya know, I tore my steering column apart shortly after making that post and found the aforementioned “donut” was full of dog hair and grime!

Super easy project, and they’ve worked perfectly for years now!

Holy crap didn’t realize that was a 4 year old post!
