I recently had my steering rack and CV Boots replaced. The other day I was in Drive, foot on the brake and this loud knocking started happening. Sound was coming from engine bay or under it. Does not continue to knock if in park or neutral.

Any ideas???

Check your engine cover and skid plates, sounds kinda like what I had, turned out to be the upper plastic cover and a missing bolt on my front skid plate.

The plastic cover's foam blocks disintegrated so it had no support besides the four mounting screws and it vibrates at idle in gear, but only when it's below 40°. Plus, when I did my swaybar links I noticed I had a missing bolt in the front skid plate near the radiator.

@landylover21 has it right. That's something like the undercovers vibrating harmonically under those conditions. I'll bet the rack and boot jobs left a bolt loose or missing on either the plastic or metal cover.

I had a similar sound, turned out to be my fan bracket. (Look for a wobble from the fan clutch). At first I thought crank, as if it were coming from deep in the engine. So glad it was a 100-200 part, but the labor is a job in my opinion. Let us know what it turned out to be.

It turned out to be the engine cover. Huge sigh of relief. Thanks for the help!

Glad to be of service! It's always nice when things that sound horrible turn out to be something trivial!
