Just the driver's side floor, gets soaked whenever it rains. Always when the 60's parked, not while driving. I'm almost certain it's not the windshield (replaced) and it's not coming in through bad weatherstrip on the door. One place i've never looked into is the vents located on the hood below the windshield... could water be leaking in through here? Getting under the dash to see looks like a pretty huge job... has anyone had the same problem?

Have you put any aftermarket stuff in i.e. alarm system or lights?? I put an alarm in my 4Runner I had and it was not sealed up correctly coming into the cab and the floor mats ALWAYS got soaked during a rain. The rain would follow the wire straight in. Fixed it in about 30 minutes...after someone told me what it was.

There are a whole bunch of threads on this same issue in this forum. I found this one the most helpful:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=12216

For my 62, a new windshield gasket (even though the windshield was just fine) did the trick.

Or just move to Seattle where it never rains anymore...

Good luck.

I have the *exact* same problem. Drivers side only water intrusion.

Replace the windshield rubber yesterday. Ugh ! Tricky & a pain in the bass because the rubber had vulcanized to the paint.

There are two drain holes in the lower windshield metal sill one on each side approximately 3 inches inboard of the A pillar. These drains are there so if the windshield rubber does leak the water has a place to go. I had water intrusion and definite leaking on the drivers side windshield sill drain.

I thought it might have been the exterior cowl vents too but bunches of folks recommended replacing the windshield rubber first.

We'll see if the new windshield rubber works.

Edit: You probably have water under the carpet on the passenger side too. What I have found is the heat from the exhaust under the drivers side drives the water up through the carpet to condense as soon as it reaches the interior. Floor mats help the condensation, thus really wet floor carpet. But in reality it's not as much water as you think. Still want to deal with it becaues it will rot out you floor panels.

Do you have any type of roof rack? I've had the rain gutter develop leaks from using canoe racks. Even with the clamps tightened down and the bars also tight, over time there is enough side to side movement with the rack when carrying one or two canoes to compromise the gutter. The leakage comes down the A pillar onto the floor making the detection particularly maddening.

No rack, maybe after 20 years the gutter goo has dried out.

Thanks for the help

yes, i've added an extra fuse block with several wires, some 0 gauge that's running into the truck through the firewall for an amp, and some theft deterrent stuff. It may be that water is seeping in through the firewall... guess i need to silicon-up some holes first. No on the roof rack and i'm almost postive it's not the door w/s. i've never seen an exploded view of the cowl so there's always uncertainty as to it's function. otherwise it's an awesome ride... i just added a fresh rebuild and started desmogging because (among other upgrades) the 2F engine i got had a header that wasn't tapped for the EGR stuff. So far so good, i'm running at 12-14mpg. there's alotta good advice in this forum. brand new toyota carb and non-usa distributor with the electronic pick up... and an MSD coil... thank god i got rid of that ignitor!! i'm keeping the cat and since i live in MD my next sniff test is in a few months. can't wait to see how this one turns out...

my 80 leaks too, but I think it is either the drain hoses in the a pillar or the windshield rubber,, going to replace the rubber and get the hoses reconnected,,,, soon,,

After having the same problem on my 62 I can say that it is FUN to track down.

I tracked it for weeks and it ended up being the rain gutters. Only small hairline cracks,
but the water was getting in and filling up the floorboard on the driver side.

All fixed now! It is just one easy thing to check. One little tiny crack and the water just
pours in, and believe me you can't see it anywhere except for all the way down at the floor.

Hope you find it soon.......and good luck !!!!!!

Oh yea, had the same problem : Bifg Time
Hance the monicer Soggy60 . . .

Yup, it's the rain gutter . . .
Especialy where is runs down A pilliar.
Poured a 'syrup mix' of parrafun & coleman fuel in track . .
Now carpet gets maybe damp in downpour . . .

Been there, done that.....yep, it sucks....

1) windshield is not sealed properly: had same problem after paintjob -- body shop had to reinstall windshield to get it to seal up. problem=not enough mastic when they installed the gasket
2) cracked caulking in your rain gutters: remove and recaulk
3) worn out window wipes
4) door weatherstripping worn and door not sealing when shut
5) wire pass through grommets in door for radio wires worn and cracked: replace (if you can find them) or repair with Automotive Goo and or silicone

Holes left from removal of factory Rack

Hi all, I found the same problem after stripping my 84 FJ60 to prep it for some sound proofing I did to it a few weeks ago. I had puddles building up on the floor by the drivers side and in the rear cargo area on the passenger side. After some thinking I took a look on the roof and noticed these little black pugs that were a bit loose. I assume they are holes from where the factory rack may have once been on this truck, but I can't be sure seeing how I just bought her last December. Amway, I just took some waterproof glue and covered the holes with it. I haven't seen a drop of water in the truck since then and it's rained a lot a few times since in RI.

Hope this helps if you haven't fixed this already. Also let me know if you want some pics of the holes I plugged.

Cheers

It's probably the gutter - try "search" lots of info and tips on how to replace the old cracked stuff (3M seam sealer) Good luck.

Next time it rains and is sitting, look at the inside bottom edgecorners of your window gasket. You'll probably see a droplet or two coming in around the glass inside the gasket. Look outside and you will see where it is pooling. Get a smalsl tube for black silicone, clean the outside of the gasket there with laquer thinner, put the silicone down in between the glass and gasket, squeeze out the excess from the gasket, and very gently clean off the excess the thinner and paper towel. I have had this hppen to several of my cruisers, works every time and in the end you can't tell the silicone is even there.
Good luck.

My 62 got wet in the same area. It turned out to be a body seam behind the fender, just below the driver's lower corner of the windshield. I was able to shoot some caulk in there w/o removing fender and it hasn't leaked since.

Gutter leak

Make sure you use the flexible seam sealer. There are a couple of choices. One hardens and stays the other hardens and will flex a bit. Use the flex in the gutter.

Dunno if yours are the same as our in oz, But the plenum chamber for the fresh air ventilation to the fan is on the LHS of the vehicle. They have a habit of rusting (like the rest of the vehicle!) at the seem. When you drive the wind blowing into the plenum directs the water away from this area. When the car sit the water runs into the area, hence the rusting. Good luck.

Note: Silicone Contains Acid That Causes Steel To Rust! Do Not Use Silicone To Seal The Windshield Gasket To The Body Or Anywhere Else The Silicone Might Contact Bare Metal!

I really wish I had known that before I put caulking in my gutter almost three years ago

Time to get a dremel with a wire wheel...
