Sometimes when I first crank the cold engine, I hear a "Pffft" sound from the passenger side footwell...sounds like a soft fart. And, it smells...almost like cordite or gunpowder.
At first, this would only happen when cranking a cold engine. Now it seems to happen very randomly when the engine is running, usually at idle (at least, that's when I can hear it).

Anybody have any idea what this is?

We were just talking about this in another thread.
That mini explosion (fart) you’re hearing in the cab and smelling is a mini explosion occurring inside the distributor cap when the engine is first cranked.
Gas fumes from the air cleaner housing that migrated down the ventilation tube to the distributor along with ozone generated by the high voltage sparking create an explosive mixture which pops at first crank, exiting into the cab distributor venting inlet. It may be a little pop or maybe blow up the distributor cap pop depending on how explosive the mixture is inside the cap.

Remedy;
Replace the distributor venting VCV clipped under the air cleaner with the FZJ80 VCV (since the FJ60 VCV is no longer available).

Wow! Thank you!
On another note @OSS, I have been combing the forums looking for your explanation on priming the carburetor for better cold starts....can you help direct me to one of those posts?
And...thank you very much.

Here’s some info I found that I outlined a while back:

Starting A Cold Engine Tip:

Crank over engine 6 revolutions (by listening to the cycles). Don't pump gas. Don't pull choke. Keep foot off pedal.

Now pull the choke knob fully.

Quickly pump down the gas pedal and ease up normally 3 times (since flooding might be your issue).

Wait 30 seconds doing nothing but praying to the cruiser gods.

With foot off gas pedal and clutch pushed in, crank over the starter.

The engine should at least grab for a moment then maybe peter out. If it peters out, fine. It ran out of fuel. Kinda normal. Just pump the gas pedal another 3 times and try again with foot off pedal.
If it sputters & stumbles at second try, finess the gas pedal to try to keep it running. Or try again repeating the steps above.
