Just purchased 94 fzj80, drove it 6-7K mi. and all of a sudden heard a loud ticking from head.:frown: Told I need a valve adjustment and possibly new hydraulic lifters. Is this common or did I get a lemon?

Can't comment on your question...but :flipoff2: .

Welcome. I'm sure people will chime in to help you out soon.

Not common, properly maintained the 1FZFE will run for a very long time. If yours was not maintained well you may have a problem. Could be just a valve adjustment. Can you give anymore details, does it change with rpms, vary on or off the gas,is there enough oil in the engine, louder at cold start or running temp?

Oh, welcome. :flipoff2:

Welcome.. Pics Please

Welcome:flipoff2:

Take a chunk of garden hose...... put one end in your ear.......and hold the other end against the valve cover/ and or various other parts untill you track down the culprit.
Poor mechanics stethyscope. They make real ones but this works pretty well
Be carefull around the moving parts.
Do a search for "garden hose".

Welcome. Shalom.

Current conditions and issues will depend largely on PO maintenance, etc.

welcome

i doubt you got a lemon but a noteworthy sudden new noise tone from the vicinity of the engine needs to be diagnosed before you put any more miles on it.

describe the noise more fully. does it fluctuate according to engine rpm or driving conditions. does it disappear in neutral?

let's also eliminate the most common cause of head problems in these trucks. any overheating since you purchased? Have you been using coolant? are your radiator and overflow levels normal? any fluctuation in your temp gauge above the usual point?

also, any recent mechanical work done? have you had the check engine light come on?

next, assuming you are sure it is coming from the motor, let's listen to the motor. an alternate to the garden hose trick if you don't have one is a wooden dowel. one end on engine, one against your ear. listen for differences from one cylinder to another.

also, listen to your fuel injectors. they are on the driver's side of the engine. you will see a long metal aluminum rail with six tubes going into the motor. these are your injectors. the dowel against each injector in turn will tell you if they are making the noise.

The difficulty with dealing with new old cars is that we are sometimes overly sensitive to possible problems. Sometimes so much so that the lightest tick can set us off.

Deal with the things you can bend your mind around like checking your hoses and baselining your timing belt and fluids. Do a vigorous engine and underbody wash and then use your vehicle regularly and observe for a month or two. Get to know your ride and use it gently at first or until you become at home with it's handling. Read the FAQ's on MUD and other sites and think before reaching for your wallet. More often than not, the 80 is perfectly fine and just needs regular maintenance.

Welcome to Mud.

all respect kalawang, but your advice would apply to a new owner thinking the motor is ticking. This guy has already owned the truck for over 6000 miles. If he has noticed a new loud ticking from the engine after 6000 miles it should be identified asap. there are many things it could be, not all of them benign.

If this happened suddenly after 6,ooo-7,ooo miles something has definitely gone wrong. I think Benj should know what the normal baseline is and would be comparing his recent problem to that.

In addition to semlins reccomendations, check oil levels closely. Is there adequate oil pressure..?

Semlin, sdbrassfield,

I read the original post as 6 or 7 kms/miles, not 6-7 thousand. I can see where I made my error and thank you both for pointing it out. If the engine tick is new, it clearly need a very good look/see to determine the cause. Isn't that one of the early signs of BEB problems ?

Kalawang

i usually think of BEB in relation to the 1hdt motor but yes, a bearing / oil pressure problem could do it.

Welcome to the insanity!
My wife hates it!! :flipoff2:

Well..... You have allot of good advice, you can't leave us all hanging. :D

The noise is definitely coming from the top of the motor, its worst when I first start it up and is does get louder as rpm increases. Also plenty of oil, no fluctuation of oil pressure.
