I am watching this thread very closely because if i don't find a 13bt to throw in my LX, I'm going to do exactly what you're doing. I can't wait to hear how it pulls that FJ45.

Little more work on the engine today. Just plugging and chugging away. Got the bottom end buttoned up, new timing gears and re-ground cam thrown into the mix. Just a few pics to show the progress...

More sandblasting and powder coating tomorrow, pulley's, water pump, thermostat housing so I can finish with the front of the engine...

awesome awesome awesome.

nice work!!

just curious- looks like you used a combo of hex head bolts and screw type fasteners on that Timing gear cover.

any reason why or just what you had on hand?

I couldn't find the right ones, must have lost them or something so, yes, it was what I had on hand. Kind of stupid of me, spending so much time cleaning/sandblasting/powder coating the parts and bolting them on with old, rusty bolts. Yes, I'm a redneck.

With that said...Found some time to work on it this week, not fast, just plugging away. Got the head on and torqued down with the OEM gasket. Just kept taking things off the shelf and bolting them in place, having a mix of two FSM's to follow.

But, its coming along and starting to look like an engine again...

Back to work...I adjusted the valves and emptied the "ready" shelf. I just put the intake on to make sure it fits and get a measurement to verify that it isn't too tall to fit under the hood.

Now it comes down to the small stuff that will actually get it running.

Intake and exhaust manifolds powder coated with "high temp" from Eastwood...

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback...
This is a great thread to check in on, I love watching your progress.
I hope I'm not the only one here who could stare at a Toyota motor for hours on end.
TT needs some nice 2F center-folds...

HEI on a 3FE? What computer are you running? MegaSquirt or stock 3F computer? Did you remove the advance springs in the dist? I've not seen this method before so thus the questions. I'm sure they will be answered and probably soon based on the progress your making, thank you for the thread. I'll go back to lurker mode now.. TIA..

I'm still not set on how the computer will work out. I picked up the HEI before this project became a 2FE. I plugged in for now but have the stock dizzy in in the event I can't get it to work...

If you change distributers then the paint scheme will not be as cool! Understood. thank you

Have to wake this thread up since work is actually being done on the 45.

I hosted a ONSC HAMOM at the house, primary goal was to dismantle it to get it out for sandblasting.

Some quick pics of the carnage...

Take-offs, what to do with these things...

Next set of pics should show a clean and rust free frame, body parts with a coat of primer, ready for repair...

The windshield frame is beyond what I'm wiling to put into it to repair, I have a replacement already.

The bed and tailgate are unobtainium so I have to repair them. At least, thats the plan as it stands now. After all the rust gets blasted away, it may change...

Did you ever finish the engine?

Did you ever finish the engine?

I haven't fired it yet, I need to get the chassis and suspension put together so I can install the drivetrain into the chassis. Its all together, ready for fuel and spark. I'm waiting to see if Marlin does come through with a Toybox run in Feb so I've shifted focus to the chassis...

Get the axles rebuilt while you wait then shoot black at the same time

The axles are fine, I guess my wording implied there was something wrong with them. I'm going in a different direction, replacing these axles with something off a newer Landcruiser...

Sorry wasn't sure if you had the front disks done or not if not now is the time while you chew your nails and wait for media blasting to be done.
In the meantime build a paintbooth in the garage. I built mine with one bys and plastic that rolls up and ties to the ceiling so it is out of the way when not in use. Also you need to order your epoxy primer. Im using spi but there are lots out there. You will be amazed when it comes home all cleaned up. To shoot the inside of the frame I used a gun from Eastwood with a hose attachment

So, got the parts back Sat, fresh from the blaster. Thanks to Ramon and Johnny for dropping by to help with the unloading.

Wound up being pretty extensive work, they did a very nice job of getting inside the frame rails and cleaning up all the rust. They put 8 gal of epoxy primer on all but the frame, covering very well. I requested a strong coating since it would be stored outside until I got to each piece for repair. No need to get it blasted again because I'm slow, allowing rust to re-form. Total cost, $1800...ouch!

The hard part was knowing I'm spending this just to find out how good/bad things are when I could have easily just closed my eyes to any issues, thrown some putty at it and repainted it for less, wheeled the crap out of it until something failed. I guess I'm growing up a bit and wanting to do things "right".

Analysis...Headache rack is golden but for having to remove the grate. Thats the best of the good, now for the challenging parts. First up, the windshield frame. Luckily, I've got a replacement already so this will be used for an experiment. The tub is in relatively good shape. Clearly it has had previous repairs, done reasonably and it needs repairs in a few spots...
