THanks for the info ya'll have given me and the info you will be giving me here
I've got an '86 fj60 and it's having some problems

1: She runs really hot. On any long drives I regularly have to stop to add coolant and drive with the heater on full. I have found that I an leaking from my the weep hole on the water pump and will need to replace it. After replacing the pump, are there any other relatively inexpensive things i can do to make her not over heat?

2: The speedometer cluster has died a couple of hours ago. What should I look at first to determine what is wrong. and what is the likely culprit?

3: I saw an ac conversion kit to make elderly ac run with r-134 coolant. It was really cheap. It had the lube, new o-rings and brass fittings. Does anyone have experience with this type of kit? and does it work?

Thanks everyone
Patrick

This may help with problem number 2..

TJK recommended this to me when I had a similar problem:

'Remove the cable at the back of the transfer case (pull the cable to disconnect from the head, then back it out with a reversing electric drill), clean it with white (lithium) grease, and reinsert it. Bet that fixes it'

... it did

Cheers, Jim

When you do the water pump, replace the thermostat with BOTH upper and lower gaskets. Might as well take the radiator to a shop and have it pro flushed. If you're still having hot problems, look into replacing the fan clutch. Don't use a generic universal cheapie - get an OE Toyota.

:bounce: I used the cheapo walmart a/c converter kit on my 80 and so far so good. Had it in for a year now. Only really need a/c in wyoming for a couple months anyways :D
I believe theres risks involved, but the price was right. :bounce:

There not all going out at the same time, everyone is trying to turn them on at the same time. It's just starting to get hot, summer is a week away :)

thor,

i just did the conversion using the wally-world $34 a/c 134 conversion kit, too. it was actually recommended and installed by my technician, who is ase toyota certified, he had used it on his 87 4runner about 4 years ago. so far so good, been about 2-3 weeks since the conversion, and i'm on the AL Gulf Coast, where it's hot several months out of the year.

Fan clutch is a good step after Tstat, water pump, rad flush, made mine over heat, replace with toyota ome and no more problem.

Thanks for the help everyone.
I'm gonna try the Wally-world A/C conversion kit. Alas, first I must find out if I have a leak, but after that it's all wally world.
I got a new thermostate and both gaskets and will be replacing them in a day or two.
I am short on money so the water pump will be purchased next friday (Payday) an that weekend I will put it in.

Thanks for all the suggestions...I hope I will be able to help all of ya'll soon.

Have a good one.

Patrick
