I have a MV50 12v. air compressor, which I was intending to install a right angle elbow for the male air outlet. Here is the problem- I can't identify the thread type of the male outlet connector which came with it. It looks like 1/4" NPT, but sit is slightly smaller and with 27 threads per inch. So it is not 1/4" NPT (18 threads per inch or the British Standard 1/4" at 19 threads. The OD of the thread of the male fitting going into the air compressor head is about 12 MM, but the threads do not conform to any metric thread pitches. What gives?

Any guesses what it is ?

IIRC, I just removed the compressor head and ran an NPT tap through it to 'convert' it to something normal.

cheers,
george.

Hi George,

That occurred to me but I measured it and thought their was not not material to get the full thread pitch. I guess you tapped it to 1/4" NPT.

Is your outlet fitting holding under high pressure? I guess with lots of Teflon tape it could hold.

Nice writeup - thanks for the link. I have two of these I was planning to install in the Cruisers.

Yep, 1/4" NPT. Works fine and there's enough meat to re-tap. I didn't have any issues when I went 1/4 NPT a year or so ago. A few drops of loctite and it's good to go.

http://www.4x4wire.com/4x4-projects/porting-the-superflow-mv50-compressor/pdf is also a good bit of info if you need to do this at some point.

The MV50 is a back up in my case, I have a Thomas for the arb's etc in my patrol back in oz.

cheers,
george.

I replaced the quick release nipple with a better one in 1/8" NPT. I modified the hose for a better quick release female fitting. I have never had an issue over the last couple years.

Been a while since I posted, but here's what I did.

Like others who read about the NPT tapping mod, I was interested -- but not comfortable doing it with a hand drill. BUT I still totally wanted that standard fitting -- and my hose was broken. Buying a new hose that I *KNEW* would fail also stuck in my craw.

...So why not mod the hose ?

Sure, it's a ghetto little extra adapter, but no tapping and took all of 5 minutes. Voila~ Standard 1/4 NPT Q/D on my compressor.
