**Please forgive the lack of extensive search...Just got to work and don't have the time. But, if I could get a little help, I may be able to fix this tonight. Thanks in advance.

Just bought a 62 and almost everything seems fine. Drove it home (about 150mi.) on the interstate yesterday at around 65-70mph. When I got off the hwy to take care of some "business" I noticed the temp gauge climbing after holding near/slightly above the 1/4 line. Got really close to red while at stop light and in gas station parking lot. Got back on the hwy and it held around 1/4 line again all the way home (with exception of sitting at stop lights where it climbed every time and back down when at speed).

Coolant level seemed fine after it cooled down in the driveway. Fan works, and no leaks or noises from water pump area. Sound like a thermostat to you? Hopefully a replace-&-ride case...

Thanks so much!

Possibly the fan clutch not kicking in. Not too sure if a 62 has one though.

x2 on the fan clutch and your 62 does have one. Do not replace with an aftermarket unit. This in an item that needs to be replaced with an OEM part. Call you local dealer(stealer) or make the right call to cruiser Dan at American Toyota in NM. I don't have his # on hand, but if you search his name you will find it.

That is it, the fan clutch I have the same problem right now on my 62, as long you are moving is fine, but soon you stop the temperature star rising.
My is on the mail, it cost me $250 OEM brand new.

Thanks guys! I didn't even think of that. Since I have time to get this figured out, I'm going to start with a thermostat, then flush the system and then replace the fan clutch. I'll go cheap first. I figure it won't hurt to replace those things anyway.

Take pictures and do writeups if you have time. Add to the lessons learned on mud and help future people in your situation.

The FJ62 fan clutch can be refilled w/ new silicone fluid if it is not showing signs of leaking or excessive wobbling.
I did this my mine not too long ago and it has been working fine. Local dealer supplied the silicone fluid for about $12/ bottle if I remember correctly. It takes two bottles to refill.
There used to be a like to instructions to separate and fill the clutch. I'm sure a search could turn up the link.
Check out the 3FE Yahoo group for specific FJ62 related questions. 3FE : Toyota 3FE group (FJ62, '91-92 FJ80)
There is also a Files section that has a lot of great info in the Lessons Learned section (including some articles on R&R the fan clutch).
It may be worth the look to spend about 10% percent of the cost of a new fan clutch.

Good lord!? where did you buy it for that much. You must have gotten it with the whole fan or something.

did the fuel gauge go up as well? could be the classic fj62 ground problem.

No, everything else remained normal. the first guy I called mentioned the electrical demons. I'll check that too, but from what I've heard/read so far, that's not it. edit: 9/23--just read through the temp/gas gauge electrical problem thread in FAQ and that is definately not what is happening here; though, I will go ahead and clean those contacts.
After more consideration and conversation, I've decided to go ahead and replace the fan clutch as well as the thermostat. I'll have to order clutch tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully this will fix the problem as I bought this cruiser as a DD and my current dd goes away at the end of the month.

Thanks again for all your help!

SOR.com, the local dealer was going to charge me 260. You can buy a use one for half a price or an after market also for cheaper but I figure the original is being there for 350K miles hopefully the new one does the same job.

Josh, figure I don't need to mention this, but don't forget about the RHT discount. Good luck replacing the clutch and the thermostat. I envision me doing the same soon...

Hey Josh- I have a hayden cooler I was going to put on my 4runner but am now selling the 4runner- I am sure we could work out a deal- it is a fin and plate- includes everything you need to install. PM me if your interested.

That's what mine does! This is a well documented issue? Both temp and fuel both go up at the same time when the engine is nice and toasty; uphill highway grades, stop and go, etc. How do I fix??
