Hey folks, just wondering if anyone here has had any luck moving the trailer connections and retrofitting them to next to the license plate, much like the newer trucks/SUVs. TIA!

The license plate is in the tailgate. I’ve never seen trailer wiring coming out the middle of a tailgate 🤔

Mine needs to be rewired so thinking about the same project. I plan to mount it to the inside of the hitch with a rare earth magnet so it's up out of the way, then can easily move it to the bottom of the hitch when actually trailering.

The easiest thing to do is route the wiring through one of the existing holes in the rear crossmember and cut a hole in the bumper cover. Then it’s all up and out of the way.

Ah, I like that idea! thanks.

I smashed mine on a trip and relocated it inside the frame on the backside of the rear crossmember. Do have to get down to plug into it but it is safely up and out of the way which was what I really needed.

I moved it up to the bumper. The back of the connector goes through one of the holes in the crossmember.

OK, this is exactly what I'm looking to do. I don't have the requisite skills required to do this on my own, what kind of shop should I look for to do this?

@HuntersHikes i think you would be surprised how little skill a tweak like that actually takes. I would try it yourself first and if you can’t make it work then take it somewhere… really just all about finding the right trailer parts and any splices.

Alternatively if you just aren’t interested in that type of project (no shame, to each their own) I would try a place that does trailer hitch installs or if you have a good go to mechanic.

The most challenging part of the relocation for me was finding the center of the cross member hole that the plug will go through and marking that on the backside of th bumper cover. It sounds simple enough, but the clearance is tight and the bumper cover doesn't sit tight to the cross member. The wiring on a 06 like @HuntersHikes has should be a no nonsense plug and play affair.

I imagine any trustworthy shop would be willing to do this kind of work.

Recently purchased a used LC and noticed the existing 7 blade plug in adapter was broken off and I’m left with a dangling gray plug. I need to source a replacement adapter but I’m not finding anything. Any help would be appreciated.

@alane24 if you don't have any luck with a replacement plug and need to do a full blown spice to remove the existing plug shoot me a PM, when i had to go through that whole mess I diagramed what wires need to go where on the trailer unit.

Thanks! I might have to do that as I've learned that the damaged plug and pigtail are Toyota Genuine and no longer available and were $200+ when available. I will likely end up having to build my own. Otherwise this might be an option: Trailer Wiring Harness for 01-07 UZJ100 Cruisers [TRAILER-HARN-01-07] - $79.99 : CruiserParts, The best place for Land Cruiser Parts! - https://shop.cruiserparts.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=7_2641&products_id=67428

The $200+ is what got me to splice in a new one. Just bought a standard Reese 7-pin/4-pin unit from Northern Tool and figured out the wiring from there. My downstream plug was still good so I cut it off and splice the new unit onto it, big first mistake was thinking the colors matched up and of course they didn't, from there is was a good bit of google and some troubleshooting but made it work. Below is how the wiring matched up:

I think I recall reading something from the trailer tech thread, or a brake controller install thread, about some of the wiring adapters for a Tundra working back there.
Might be worth an “investigation”.
HTH.

related: what special tool can I use to disconnect the trailer plug extension from the frame plug?

tried hand pull wile depressing plastic lock feature, tried plyers (difficult to "grab" lock feature). no dice...
