Thanks for all the replies guys...both classics I am taking with me are pre-smog (69 FJ40 and a 70 Chevelle) so as long as it's nothing more than a VIN check it sounds like I am ok. I was worried about having to throw a bunch of money at the FJ to get cats, post CAT o2 sensors, EVAP, and a new tune at it to get it to pass CA smog.
As for the collector's plates I'm not going to even try it, it's too obvious. If I was moving to say Redding and had a Oregon plate I might wing it for awhile but down there I would get stopped pretty quick. Not worth it IMO.
When I lived in So-Cal before I left all my vehicles and my driver's license registered in Siskiyou County (far north end of the state) at my folks house. This kept me out of the bi-annual smog routine that a lot of the southern counties do. My registration was also a little bit cheaper.
